Picture of my Lyman M Die with a 40 caliber compression plug and a separate 40 caliber expanding plug purchased separately.
The threaded rod which fits into the M Die came with the .40 long expander plug.

Also a picture of the Lee Expanding Die with separate expanding or compression plugs.

I was under the impression that the sizing plugs were no longer for sale individually, that you have to buy a whole M die? Is this not the case?

I bought a whole new die for my 25-20. Sure would like to be able to purchase only the expander plug.

Well I sent an email to Lyman earlier this week to ask that question, since they don't list them on their site. They sent me back a reply saying they are available, and a number to call to find out what sizes they had.
So they are still available as just plugs.

Vall,

Thanks, that's good to know. Wish I'd have know it before I went another direction. I've got a couple of L M die bodies and 3 short, and extra of the threaded shafts that hold the plugs.

Next time I need another expander size, I'll look at Lyman first.

At some point in time a previous owner modified my M dies. I bought both Long and Short M dies, plus a variety of expanders at our OAC show cheaply. Both dies had the sides milled off the threads so you can watch the expander enter the necks. It's a great modification that Lyman should do to these dies, as I've heard a lot of people say they crushed case necks trying to get a case started over the expander.
