New Toy - BSA Martini MKII (Read 7674 times)

	I picked up this rifle today from a local BR50 shooter who needed to finance a new bolt .22. He had acquired a shorter forend and a thumb hole stock to make weight but had the original for-end and a conventional (but not original) butt-stock. It came with proper Parker Hale iron sights, a Unertl 20x scope and an adapter that mounts in the receiver holes that the sight rail uses that allows use of conventional scopes. I need to fit the conventional stock a bit and repair a small crack and get a butt-plate that fits to make it legal. I hope to make it to the range in the next couple of days to see how it shoots. 	Bob, I don't think that legal stock has been on this rifle. There is some excess betting that I need to remove to fit it properly. I will do that tonight so I can shoot it at the match this weekend and re-bed it later. I will probably sell the thumb hole stock as it is not legal in ISSA or ASSRA. That aluminum prong butt plate is way too big for these stocks and will probably be eBay fodder. I forgot how big and heavy these were. Now I remember why I did not like shooting my MKIII offhand. I still have Chuck's old Stevens 44 for that. See you Saturday Jack

	Those aluminum butt plates work good for offhand if they are adjustable. Too bad that one isn't. They can make up for a lot of clumsy, heavy and awkward, but not quite all of it

	I just got back from shooting it. Had to skip out of work so I didn't have too much time. I found a combination of ammo and bag position that should be OK for tomorrow's match. The standard butt stock has some serious fitting issues but is functional enough for now. It is 1/8" shy of fitting flush with the receiver between the "ears" of the stock and the channel for the lever was not cut straight so the bottom of the lever will not go into it. Some serious wood work and bedding to come this winter. Keeps me off the streets! No "regerts" like the bad tattoo says. The price was right! I could probably sell the scope and the Parker Hale sights and extra stocks and recoup what I paid but what fun is that. Jack

	OK to me means hopefully not last! Once I get the chance to put hundreds of dollars of expensive target ammo through it to see what it likes my expectations go up. Jack

	I hope you find the holy grail with a few hundred dollars worth of ammo. Sometimes it takes thousands to find it

	That is what I shot last year at Tacoma and at Spokane in Chucks old Stevens. I picked up a brick of Lapua Exact-X when Bullets.com had a sale. That shot well this morning. Like most of my rifled it shot better off the barrel right ahead of the forearm than it did off the stock. My rest top is too high for my range anyway. Going to make another tonight. It only costs about $5 to shoot 50 shots in my 25-20. This rimfire stuff is expensive!!! Jack

	Pete, I took it to Tacoma today to shoot in the fall single shot match. Conditions were perfect. My ammo can of .22rf was at home Luckily there was plenty of shooting to to with CF rifles. Back tomorrow with just .22s. The wind will probably be howling! Jack

	I remembered to bring some .22 ammo today. As I predicted and the cold wet front approached the morning winds were quite squirrely. I tried various types of ammo and bag positions and eventually put the original front forearm on. At that point it began to group better. I shot this group as the winds became a bit more predictable and went on to shoot a 245 5x. I think it is a keeper. Some more practice to do but I am happy. Jack

	I knowhow that works. Lots of times my first sighted in offhand is a 24 or 25. I know I probably will not keep shooting them. Had to look forward to reality.
