Question on Saeco bullet mould
Aug 17th, 2017 at 4:20am
Print Post
recently I purchased a 4 cavity Saeco mould #545 maybe I have been looking in the wrong places but cant find it listed in any Saeco catalog. it is a 32 caliber 175 gr. the top band is .313 next one is .314 next is .317 wide band above the lowest band is .320 and last but least the bottom band reads .319. ( I measured these with a chi com caliper so could be off a little bit. ) when shooting I found it needed to be seated deeper into the throat because of the taper. I am not trying to sell it just want some information as I couldn't find any. joe in selah wa.

Joe - the bullet design of your #545 is of a Pope tapered style. The base band was originally .322 diameter. During my time with Saeco Reloading we only offered this mould in single cavity. The mould you have was made sometime after Saeco was sold to new operators, apparently they attempted to sharpen the cherrie without referring to the design drawing. Perhaps you could find a machinist to bore base band to its correct dimension.

thanks for the reply it actually shoots pretty well as it is. I think I will leave as is as long as the bullets go where I want them to go.. one thing I learned was the front bands are smaller than other moulds I have and this bullet needs to be seated deeper than my standard plugged case. using the adjustable plugged case I made and seating bullet well into the throat really makes a huge difference in accuracy.

one more question how come I cant find information. is this mould rare? special order or am I looking in the wrong place. I am going to re measure with my mic. and get an accurate measurement. I want to try this bullet in my 8.15x46r. it might really be the ticket for it. argie1891

Jos - glad to hear that the bullet shoots well for you. This mould was listed in the Saeco Reloading catalog in the Saeco-Darr Rifle Company section with a Carpenters, CA address. All of the moulds in this section were made to individual order and test cast before shipping. This mould is no more rare than any other custom mould.

Barry

thanks I plan on casting a bunch and selling it. I have a bunch of 32 caliber moulds and I keep those that shoot best and get rid of the rest. if I remember correctly I paid around $65.00 for it so should be able to maybe make a little on it. so far the hoch 195 322 shoots best in my cpa rifle. it is kinda funny it shoots so much better than the 322 200. who would think 5 grains makes that much difference. but I have been casting bullets and every mould and gun is different. I have 3 different 311284 all shoot best in different rifles.

I borrowed one of those early Saeco .32 molds that cast 195 grs from a friend.  It shot really well in my .32-40 Stevens.  I ordered one and it cast about 5 grs heavier and did not shoot nearly as well as the 195.  Interesting more than one of us had the same results.
