New 32-40 Brass?????
Jul 18th, 2017 at 3:06pm
Print Post
I was looking at some WW, nickel plated, "Duke" 32-40 brass on the internet that was claimed to be new, but showed evidence of a crimp where the base of the bullet would be.  I questioned the seller who maintained the brass was "new".  I have always assumed any crimping to the case would be done after the bullet is seated including the base crimp. The photos weren't clear enough to detect remnants of a case mouth crimp.
Some time ago I bought some similar brass that was claimed to be "new" but after receiving them, it was clear they had been fired; both the case mouth and bullet base crimp were visible.  I contacted the seller who apologized; I think he had been duped also.  Interestingly, the cases were squeaky clean even the primer pockets.  The cases were also WW "Duke" marked and I then wondered if WW would have sold these cases as reloading supplies.
Anyone have knowledge about factory crimping?
Thanks,
Mike.

Most if not all of the newly made in the sealed bag 32-40 unfired brass I have purchased over the years has came with the crimp.

I didn't know the "Duke" nickeled brass was ever available as just brass? All I ever saw was loaded ammo.

All of the Duke Nickle brass I have come accross was all at least one fired. If it does not come in an unopened package I would not trust it as being new. I was making referance to new un-nickled brass but I also have had real good luck with the once fired nickled brass and actually liked it a tad more than the un-nickled for my use not requiring any re-sizing and that might cause an unknown issue to me by not having a need to resize it.

Hi folks, I've not been able to get any 32-40 loaded ammo or brass now for decades, although i admit I've not been looking for it. I picked up an early '94 a few years ago in 32-40 with a pristine bore. As having loaded 32 Winchester Special for many years, I decided to try to form 32-40s from these empty cases. I have an old Herters HD press that had a great mechanical advantage over the others I had. Using heavy leather gloves and RCBS 32-40 dies, I was able to form 32-40 cases with one stroke of the handle. Using 30-30 cases, I had to open the mouth with 32 Spec expander die or most of the cases would collapse. Though a bit short, they work perfectly. Search this forum and you'll find many folks using the same technique. Enjoy.

I use Star-Line 38-55 2.08 brass to make my 32-40. They stretch to about 2.110 during forming using RCBS Cowboy dies. I get the neck dents out by running through a 38-55 die before forming it helps to prevent the neck from collapsing.

Round from original box 165gr SP.  That's the only they were sold - no loose brass

Were there any "Duke" cases, that were not plated? I seem to recall seeing such, but I'm not at all certain. Since we're on the subject.....................

Never seen any "Duke" brass that wasn't plated when new. I've seen some reloaded so many times the nickel was almost gone tough! They also made some in .38-55 nickeled and labeled "Legendary Frontiersman". Had a couple boxes once, and may still be sitting around here somewhere?

Thanks, I wasn't at all sure if what it "thought" I saw was real. It isn't any big worry, just checking to see how far my dementia has progressed. Wink
