I shoot the Ideal 37584 - 320gr bullet in my Wurfflein. So far it is accurate to 300 yds with black powder:
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
Per Ideal catalog - This is a popular series of bullets for both short and long range.
I did  the 3x diameter (.369 - .376) using the bore diameter with 18 twist.
The cast bullets are 1.182.  The 3x calculation says the bullet length should be 0.9725785 where the Ideal cast bullet is 0.2095 longer

Hi Dellet, I select bullet shapes around the 45cal Potsel and the RCBS 45cal 3 groove 553grain bullets and anything in between nose shapes, leaning to 4 grease grooves with a thick base band, sometimes have machined an extra forward driving band to give support to long nose bullets with good results. I will take a statement from BrentD "ONE CAN OVER-ENGINEER ALL THE FUN OUT OF SHOOTING" as I believe that 30% is bullet, lube, wads, powder etc the rest is The Nut Behind The Trigger and the K.I.S.S. Factor.  Vic

Hi John, I have a .40/70 made on the .348 win case with RCBS flat nose length 1.142 for 18 twist and 67grains of 2f, and sived fire cracker powder! shot well right from the get go. I then tried the seco 376gr bullet and had to go to 71grs of 3f before it started to perform even with the better nose shape but longer than my 3x method, so that's the method I use and happy to put it out there for the org OP and any one who else to play with. Vic.

AH2, I sure like your comment about over-engineered shooting. I have a friend who won a match we happened on using his truck gun- a cheap .22 and glove box ammo to beat high-buck rifles and very erudite shooters. He knew where his was going to shoot very well.
Nothing against fine equipment here, just a belief that if it gets to looking like work the hell with it.
