Let's start with the missing basics in your post:
* Pb or jacket bullets?
* Weight of bullet you plan to use
* Powders you have
... The 38-55 has a maximum 30,000 CUP pressure and there are common powder charges for the 9.3x74R that normally exceed 30,000 CUP that of a 38-55... data that you have to subscribe for ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
... The 38-55 should be reloaded with a fps less than 1600 fps with a 255gr Pb bullet using smokeless powder

A black powder reload can be 42-48 gr of FFg powder with a bullet weight up to 320 gr

Sorry Larry - you have homework that you have to do

why don't you start by telling us what kind of rifle it is chambered in.  that might make a big diference.

For example, I have an 8.15x46r in a custom Ruger Number 3 that i could create hunting  loads that might grenade some of the older euro schuetzens.

Larry, the Ruger should be easy but the double adds the considerable problem of finding a load that will be sympathetic with the regulation of the barrels. Minute of big boars at 50 yards should be doable but piglets at 75 might be a difficult task.

Larry, I had completely forgotten that I did try some 295 grain lead bullets in my 9.3x74R with different powders a year ago. Here's what I wrote back then: So, a few days shy of a year ago I wrote "Frank, I just happened to find some well cast 295 grain bullets that I picked up somewhere. The label says they were from an NEI mould so we'll see how she likes them" after his suggestion to try some cast bullets. Finally today I did. I set up a ladder test using most of the comparable data I could find. I shot Unique 14, 15, 16 grains; Red Dot 12, 13, 14 grains; Reloader 7 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 grains; 4759 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 grains; 4198 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 grains; and 4227 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 grains. The 24-25 grains 4227 looked most promising but the Red Dot 13-14 and the Reloader 7 29-30 could also be. I only have another 25 of those bullets so I may blow them on a more extensive test of the 24-25 range of 4227 and if that turns out well may have to find the NEI mould they came from. I might add that from the response of my shoulder that the 4759 loads were especially moving right along.
