Case blocks

Told a friend I'd like some loading blocks that could handle my .32-40 and .38-55 cases charged for breech seating. He built these two boxes with deep blocks as the base, so shells wont move around or tip over. A thin piece of foam rubber over the case mouths keep the necks covered and the lid slides over to keep everything in place. Each box holds 60 cases without a bullet. I didn't want cases deep enough for fixed ammo, as I've got plenty of plastic boxes for that.
He did a nice job, and I'll give them a test when I go to our annual long range shoot in a week. Plan to breech seat for a couple rifles and see how it works at longer distances of 500-1000 yds.

Oooooo.  One could put two slots in it - one for empties and the other for loaded.

Don't need two slots. I simply turn the cases upside down once fired to keep them separated.

I use those plastic boxes, but I sure don't like them. Having something well made by a friend is much better. I love the smell of the cedar, and was going to put a finish on them, but then I couldn't enjoy the smell!

I have seen quite a few using the plastic MTM pistol cases to store just their lubed bullets in over the years and I have also done the same. The problem with doing so out this way when the temps. get close too and above 100 the lube tends to get to soft if not contained in a cool insulated lunch box or similar cool container and the accuracy will suffer by not doing so based on my own personal experience.

Also if breech seating I only take along a couple of cases just in case I happen to loose one. If I have to change to a different case its typically a whole new ball game as they won't shoot to the same point of impact nor will they achieve the same high degree of accuracy. It can be overcome by seperating by shooting and then seperating after having been shot several times along with carefull measuring and then by just throwing away the bad ones that just won't follow suit. But it is also not required unless one is having to shoot multple cases and then there is simply no way around it.

Since my shooting is all casual and not competition John, it makes things simpler for me to prime and charge all the cases ahead of shooting. I realize it's not as accurate as serious shooters can be with one case, but it allows me to get more shooting done without re-depriming the same case at the range.  So for my purposes these will make life easier. If I ever decided to compete, these would probably see no use at matches.

Nice work.  I make a lot of small boxes with different construction methods.  Recently friend gave me some wood wine boxes, built for high dollar bottles.  They have that same sliding top. Been using them for my Lever Silhouette ammo and found the design works very well.

Flat top you can stack, stays closed without hardware and no hinges to install. Going to make some up with better wood and finish, move the wine boxes to shop storage jobs.

Thanks for posting.

Shiloh did a nice job on those, Vall.  I'll look forward to seeing them next week.  I may have to copy them

I'm not set up for breech seating with my 32-40 yet, but may bring my LW 25-20. My de/reprime tool from Gerry was here at the house when I got home from Washington yesterday, and he set it up for 25-20 and 32-40. He did a beautiful job on the tool, just like your BS tool that he made for you.

Shiloh told me he's thinking of reworking these boxes to a heavier sides and lid. But I actually like the 1/4" sides and lid, as they look great and are plenty of meat for strength. I'm sure heavier would be beefier; but just not sure that's needed.
