Old Stevens action, what to do?

Picked this up at a Show and though missing a lot of the internals it came home with me.  Has a 3 digit serial number stamped in the tang.  Suggestions? In my younger days I would have made a Hornet out of it......

This is a Stevens Favorite action, .870" thick.  Having a dickens of a time posting pictures.  Old dogs, new tricks, no rewards.....

Later period 1894 Favorite, has the screwed-down hammer spring.   Not a lotta choices what to do with it, assuming you can scare up a barrel and the missing internals from Gunbroker or evilBay.  .22 Long Rifle by far the easiest to do, of course.  Three digit number is meaningless - they stopped sequential numbering long before that one was made.  They got a letter + 3 or 4 digits, perhaps as a lot number.  Only early ones with the 7 o'clock extractor have a real serial number.

I'm not an expert, but if it were mine I would try making a 22lr with an octagon barrel

Don't get too involved with it. You're time and money are best spent elsewhere.
Put it in a drawer and maybe someday some parts will show up.
It's like wire coat hangers, put two in a dark closet and next time you look, they'll be a dozen.

If it's missing much, it's cheaper to buy a whole gun than replace very many parts. But if you get the action working, I'd recommend a .22LR only.

Thanks to all for the info.  Have a friend that is retiring and wanting to work on guns.  Looks like it will be a nice first polish exercise for him.  David

Here is what I did with an old Stevens Favorite.  Bent the tang, taped the action to scew in the barrel, casehardened, turned a green mountain 27" barrel to 1/2 octagon, rust blued, CPA stevens stock blank, ballard buttplate.

Here is another one that I started and will hopefully finish someday.  It was a really rough 25 cal that I bought sight unseen for $50, used it to try some more casehardening and now I think it needs to become something nice. The weak Canadian dollar kills me and pretty much doubles the price of the stock blank by the time you pay the xtra shipping, taxes and exchange.

Beautiful work on the Favorites, Rex N. I'd love to have a Favorite like the top one - who wouldn't. Gorgeous!

Mr Davis, if you had chambered a Stevens Favorite in 22 Hornet in your younger days and fired it, you would not have seen your older days. The Hornet has blown up Krags. I read a piece about the Favorite and it said some of the older ones are not strong enough for modern .22 Long Rifle cartridge.

Thanks, I have built a few but that is probably my favourite, pun intended!

The other action is one of three old rusty things I had bouncing around that I decided to practice casehardening on.  Here are all three right after casehardening, no laquer just some oil on them.

Here is a couple of 44's that I built from parts.  The one in the homemade case is my 22bpcr silhouette rifle and it is deadly.

Nice rifles and actions.  Nice case also.  Where did you get the case?

Never mind the mule. Just load the wagon.

Thanks I just made the case from plywood and covered it with canvas duck in hunter green.

Where did you get the Stevens Label in the case? It looks so right with the case and the gun.

I just found it on google and printed the picture on antique colored paper.  My daughter is going to design a gun makers label for me for future cases. I would love to find an original and take a higher resolution picture.
