Just picked this guy up in 38-55.
32" part octagon Remington Arms Co. barrel with an excellent bore.
Came with a set of Circassian walnut benchrest left hand stocks also, plus breech seater, bullets and brass.
The top tang is marked G. Giddings, anyone familiar with him?

Thanks Guys,
I went to my first BPCR shoot at the Central Florida Rifle range near Orlando last week.
They shoot monthly, black powder only, 300 yds. max.
They say 38-55 should be enough, but I have another Heppy in 40-70 SS with a great bore and less finish, I'll probably use that one.
I don't cast yet, any suggestions for store bought?

Giddings was a famous stock maker who worked for Remington and made stocks for High grade Hepburns(maybe others too. I don't know) I think if you look in Jim Grants books you will find some information on him.

Remington had two in house stock makers at that time who did all the high end stock work on the expensive guns. Giddings was one of them, but I can't find my data telling me who the other was?
Surprisingly Remington allowed both men to stamp the stocks in hidden areas with their names. Not a usual thing for most gun makers, and I don't know of any others who allowed employees to do what Remington did.
My Hepburn Match B is also a GIDDINGS marked stock.

The other guy was probably William Dehl.
Found it in a link posted on Double Gun.

Thanks Aaron! I wasn't even going to guess, as my memory isn't great!
But the new Hepburn is stunning, and a very good purchase!

Very nice!! That is a heavy barrel. Not sure how it would work for off-hand.
Get in touch with Tom Klinger (who posts here) in FL. He is also an original Hepburn shooter and can "show you the ropes" for that match. The reason it is BP only is that it is an NRA BPCR match and that is what the rules dictate. Am sure they would allow you to shoot that rifle, but with the Schuetzen butt-plate am guessing you could not figure in the final scoring for a win. No hooked butt-plates of any sort in NRA BP matches. After you 'get your groove' at the 300yd FL match, you can try your hand at the 500m (std distance) BPCR matches in MS and GA.

Thanks Glenn.
I have another Hepburn in 40-70 to shoot, or a Ballard #5 in 40-65 that should meet the rules.
This one will see some bench rest, another set of stocks comes with.

Aaron, you'll get along OK with those Florida guys. Glenn and I have shot with them in GA. I was on my way to shoot with them in March but my mother in law passed away and I had to turn around and come home. Tom Klinger and Kim Kelley will give you good advice. I'm glad you got your feet wet in BPCR silhouette.

Rebel went crazy barking at the door about 7:30 pm this evening.
It was UPS with the new Hepburn.
It's a Remington Arms, as opposed to an E. Remington and Sons, I didn't think it would come to my home.
Let me first say that packing peanuts should be banned and any shipper that uses them should be castrated.
Inside the very large heavy box were one rifle and 5 smaller wrapped items, benchrest left handed buttstock, matching forearm, breech seater, 50 unlubed boolits and 30 cases.
Wow, this is one heavy rifle, and a prize in my collection!
I tried standing up and sighting it, I need more muscle if I were to try an offhand match.
Studied it hard and couldn't find a flaw, although the breechblock needs quite a bit a force to close. DST's work great.
Darn, I sure am addicted to these things.
Turned out to be a great day and just in time for my Bday Saturday.

Glad it made it there OK! Most Remington Arms Co. markings indicate post bankruptcy of 1886, and the marking change started in 1888-89 era. So many will be antique status.
The extras with the gun are a nice bonus to have!

That new pic shows a much nicer rifle then I recall from the auction listing pic. Congrats. That's some nice wood.
Have you checked the twist? If an old barrel likely to be too slow to shoot a competitive bullet in BPCR or BPTR. But, with that barrel it would be quite difficult to hold up for off-hand shooting (at least for me - my 38cal barrels are #3 1/2 & #3). Will be just the ticket for Scheutzen.

Thanks Glenn,
It seems that Giddings worked on the better stocks. It has flawless 30lpi checkering that doesn't show well in the pic.

I think of it as a Schuetzen rifle, although not being personally very competitive, I could use it for most disciplines.

The left handed wood that came with it it set up for benchrest, but the Circassion Walnut doesn't work well with the depicted buttstock. Does anyone right handed shoot with left handed stocks? Seems possible.
Then again, it's not all about looks.
I have another DST Heppy in 40-70SS, I'm not sure whether to keep it or use it for BPCR, good predicament to be in.

Might be getting your rifles mixed up. Was thinking your rifle was a 40-70, so likely my error. Can't have too many great Hepburn rifles.

I see no reason at all that an offside cheekpiece wouldn't be easy to shoot. Especially if your range distances are not way out there where you'd lose cheek contact with the stock.
I came very close to buying a Hepburn Match B from Ron Peterson that was left handed a year ago at the Denver show. Was contemplating how it would feel, and whether I could shoot it, when a 2nd Match B in right hand, with 34" barrel got set on the table! Made up my mind, as I couldn't afford both anyway. If I could, I'd probably have purchased both, as a lefty would be much more rare.
