	I am just getting back into single shot rifles. my plan is to start with a 22 lr then move on to a centerfire unless I find a center fire 1st that will work. I may attend 1 - 2 matches a year and will be content competing and not concerned about the place I finish. my question is why are auction prices so much lower than sites such as gun broker. where should I concentrate my search ? there so few gun shows in my area and forget about dealers.

	What is it you are looking for and how much do you want to spend would probably be the best question for you to answer to help get you started. I know of several nice competitive rifles for sale that will probably never get listed any where and maybe there are others here who might be aware of the same. JLouis

	If you want a gun to actually shoot, visit some of the single-shot matches within your driving range. Frequently guys will have single shots they have "out-grown" for private sale----at a LOT better prices than gunshows, auctions, and on-line sales. sometimes are just "downsizing" as they are getting older too. Particularly for in beginning shooter who can pick up a good functional rifle without all the fancy (expensive) collector's bells and whistles. I've seen shooters sell a good introductory rifle at a great price to help a new shooter get started.

	I am going to get to a match in either Bath, Ny or Alabama, Ny this summer. My brain finally prevailed upon my heart to wait until after going to a match to buy a rifle. I'm learning more each day from this forum and by the time I'm ready to buy I will be more prepared. thanks to all of you.

	Give a good look at the .22 Martinis as they are usually pretty reasonably priced and they all seem to shoot well. 40 Rod

	rafter, you're welcome and thank you too. I lean towards an original American made rifle but how often do you find one with a bore without some issues. starting with an action is one route, but I think I will find what I need if I'm patient. then modify it or develop a plan for a build.

	Auction prices are often much lower than Gunbroker prices, because the number of bidders is lower. Also the auction prices often don't reflect buyer's premiums, so if that's the case the end cost might be 15-20% higher. I'd agree with going to a match first, and also feel that might be a great venue to put out feelers for the single shot rifles you're interested in. A lot of shooters have something at home they might part with, or know an old shooter who has quit and may know of a gun he'll sell.

If this is a possibility, I'd think you could get into a used CPA for, with a bit of luck, a good bit lesser cost. Adding a second barrel could make moving between rimfire and center fire easier on the wallet. I believe it could be a rifle that can help a newer shooter and satisfy an advanced shooter. I figure for me, searching for one antique rifle or action and having it turn out to be a best solution, would in truth be highly unlikely or a disappointing compromise between cost, performance and originality. I think to some extent, do your homework, look in places and make efforts that weren't on your radar, then it may come to you. Tomorrow morning, you could be looking over a bargain of a lifetime, and it might be helpful to be ready to react or walk. Best of luck with it.

	craig. when the statute of limitations is up or a certain member has gone to the big range in the sky I'll have a story for you. it's about a near miss recently. no action adventure or romance just a graphic demonstration of my lack of knowledge sweetened with a little bad luck / poor timing.

	thank you wtw. I'm devoting about an hour a day to exploring and research. there sure are a lot of rifles that catch my eye but I'm staying focused. at least I'm not starting from scratch. I've had 1885's both high and low, Ballards, a Stevens 44, a Hepburn and a Bullard in the past.
