I would not open my wallet to Dale it's empty so no benifit to him. But I sure would enjoy shooting with him some day. I have a strong appeciation for those who work hard to achieve their personal accomplishments and it provides me a unique opportunity to sit down when all is said and done to learn from them and a very welcomed benefit to me.

Mighty fine shooting for the first 200 yard outing, especially in that kind of mirage. I'll be looking forward to future targets.

Amen Jerry I believe Pope only guaranteed 2" or 21/2" for the 32-40.

John
Does anybody know when made the statement about 2" or 2.5" groups. While 2" isn't much of a big deal nowadays with modern smokeless powders, perhaps Harry made that comment in the days of black powder, in which case I would think 2" at 200 yds would be very good.

Mike it was in a copy of his advertisment and in all honesty I do not know if it was related to just BP, Duplex Loads or Smokless. But I would tend to assume it left enough room for those who were not ranked as being  the top competitive shooters and his barrels could do much better than what he stated his guarantee to be. If not there would probably have been quite a few of his barrels being sent back.

From Harry Pope’s 1899 catalog:
These prices were for a barrel fitted to customer’s action, with false muzzle and bullet mould.
Price untested: $35
Tested at 200yds from machine rest guaranteed 10-shot group in 3 inch circle or closer $40
Tested at 200yds same as above, 10-shot in 2 1/2 inch group or closer $45
Pope’s recommended load during that period of time for a muzzle loaded 32-40 was 3-5 grains (bulk) of DuPoint No.1 smokeless powder as priming charge with the remainder of the case full of Hazard Kentucky FG or King’s FG Semi-Smokeless powder. A card was placed in the case mouth to hold in the powder. This was a very common load among Schuetzen competitors of the late 1890s through the end of the era.

I honestly stand in awe at the kinds of groups you fellows shoot.  I can shoot just as well as most of you..................but at 25 yds!  Maybe someday...............................................

To actually answer the original question of this thread, I tend to hold myself to a higher standard than I can achieve with the skills I hold at any given moment.  I'm afraid that is often cause for great disappointment.

Good shooting. All in 250s are always impressive.
If you are willing to share, please let us know details such as:
Rifle

If your load works for me, I'll shoot you a 250 in the shape of a G  Wink

This is a lot of work and requires an afternoon at the range. Wind flags and noting how the wind impacts each shot are strongly recommended.

The one other item I do is take my BSA Martini Mark III with match ammunition to test that day's ability of the nut behind the butt-plate.

Research what other shooters are using in your caliber in the SSRJ; the Cast Bullet Association also publishes equipment and loads on their website. I also look here for the .32-20 CPA and the .25-20 WCF listing.

Once I think I have a good load, I get very serious about testing:

  • Three targets stacked on each other and aligned at 100 yards.

  • Shoot one ten-shot group and remove top target, mark and set aside

  • Add new target and shoot second ten shot group and remove top two targets, mark each target and set aside

  • Add new target and shoot third ten-shot group, mark and set aside

  • Record wind conditions and call each shot for later analysis

  • Repeat at 200 yards

You now have five targets at each range; three ten-shot, one twenty-shot and one thirty shot, that you can check against your notes and analyze how the load performed and be statistically reliable.

Well Frank, I'm not cheap but I can be had for the right price.  Does Elaine make fudge? Chocolate fudge with nuts and marshmallows?   Huh

Come on Joe, we are best of friends, you know BFF. I thought you'd do anything for me:(

I might spring for a box of animal crackers though. I'm not cheap either Smiley
