What level of performance do you except from your?
Jun 2nd, 2017 at 11:05pm
Print Post
I have been trying benchrest  at our local matches for the last couple of years and have tried different cartridges , rifles , bullets and powders . Always trying to shoot smaller groups. I shoot a lot at 100 yds. as I have a 100 yd range in my yard , and  mostly shoot 200yds at matches .

My question is what size groups should be expected at 100yds and 200yds (schuetzen style ) ?

What can you achieve regularly (not just that one lucky group) ?

Thanks Dales

I look at the match results section. I think it's even better when rifles, sights and loads are listed.

I try to work up a load that will give me consistent 5 shot  groups at 100 yds. that average .75" and under... Especially Under!
To shoot a 250 at 200 yds...you have to keep 10 shots inside twice that .75" or 3/4 MOA...

Remember that shifting from 100 to 200 yards is a lot more than simply a straight mathmatical extension of the angle of dispersion.  Doubling the distance of a bullet's flight exposes it to twice as much of  bunch of variables.   The 100-yard groups CAN be valuable development tools, but they are just half way to your objective.

True, but most likely if it wont shoot at 100 it wont shoot at 200..

Dales I shoot for 5 - 5shot groups that will average .500 and under and they are very doable unlike some might have you believe. There was a point in time where I shot 13 consecutive averages at or under .500 before setting the new record. These were all shot on various days under varying conditions and some of the groups were as small as .198 and several were in the .200 & .300 range. I truly believe it all boils down to what each individual wants to work hard enough to accomplish based on a personal goal one sets for himself. It took trying 5 seperate bullet designs, alloys, various primers, seating depths and countless hours at the range to find out what my rifle liked to get it there. There are those who are just not willing to commit to doing so and will never get everything out of their rifle that it ruly has to offer or themselves and are just content with settling for less. They also tend to be the nay-sayers who say it can't be done using tin and alloy breech seated lead bullets using a traditional rifle in 32-40 while also having the barrel resting on a front sand bag rest and will argue it as being simply impossible to do.

Dales in regards to 200yds. I have 14ea. 10 shot targets hanging on my wall that I constantly use for referance. These were shot at various times through out a 1 year time frame under varying conditions that average 1.42 in group size and were shot with my 28-35SS. I believe that once I get this rifle shooting up to its full potential I believe I can get that average to be even less. If one is shooting one of the various 32's or 33's I would think an average of 1.25 under the same varying temps. and conditions would then become very doable if one commited to being able to do so and maybe even less. I think but am not positive that Jerry Hartwig is currently and has been doing this with his 25WCF based on the various targets I have seen him shoot over the past couple of years.

Thank you all for your input .  With my Miller bench rifle I always feel I screwed up if my groups are .500 or larger , I have been trying to keep under 3/8" but can not average 3/8 and I was wondering what others could do.
I find Shooting a traditional (offhand stock) rifle to be very challenging and keeping under 1/2" for 5 groups to be just out of reach .

As most match results do not give equipment lists it would be great if we could have members list equipment and load info with the results they have achieved .

John I have your posts and know you have shared much of your equipment  and load materials that you use.

For myself my bench rifle is a Miller with a 32 cal Smith barrel ,232grain Hoch mold and I have found Enforcer (4100) powder with  Federal Small rifle primers to be the most consistent .

Thanks Dale

one Moa is a starting point these days you need to refine your 200 yard performance to half that at 200 yards (1 inch) you are not competitive at most big matches. If you can't shoot 1/2 MOA on a calm day you will be lost when the wind starts to blow.

Concise and nicely stated. In a nutshell, that's what it takes to win BR matches.
The editor has spoken. Thank you for your perspective.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Ken very impressive shooting with the 300MP first time out with it. Under .500 shooting old school makes it even more so to one who is fully aware of the additional challenge my friend. Then to be able to do it with no serious load development says alot about the quality of the choked BRC barrels and how user friendly they are in my book. I know how hard I had to work with load development to get my Douglas XX consistently down to .500 and under and it surely was not just getting out a few times. It took weeks of going out twice a week using five different bullet designs among other things as stated earlier to get it there.

Extremely impressive and I am looking forward to your 200yd. results and your primer choice.

Ken
Very nice shooting and a great looking Borchardt . Thank you for posting your results.
Shooting with your more traditional stocks sure takes more attention to details and you seem to have that well under control .

Dales you have your 32 shooting extremely well at 100yds. and even more so yourself. Knowing when to hold a quarter, half or a full bullet diameter out and where is not an easy skill for one to aquire but by hard work, dedicataiton and more importantly the desire to learn. I also agree with what 40Rod had to say about 200yds. but in my own opionon they are only good for load development only and even then the calm can be very missleading. I prefer to go out and practice in conditions so I can clearly see what is going on accross the range and learn something from it. Even when one thinks there is a dead calm condition something unseen is still going on at least at our range and it will burn me more times than not by not being able to see and recognize just exactly what is. Sounds odd but that is the way I prefer to do my load development also by knowing what condition does what to where I call my shots and sticking to just the one that is prevalent. My main goal is in not shooting a few one inch groups but to consistently get my day in day out year round average down. Right now it's at 1.42 and very capable of remaining in the top three if I do my part or shooting 250's for that matter. But that is also not my main goal it is to win by placing the odds in my favor or another and maybe a better way to look at it is not to loose by doing the same and that approach has always served me well.

I also know my rifle will shoot an inch but it would also be a lie for me to say that I have the ability to do it consistently or very often for that matter. In sixteen years of extremely dedicated shooting, experimentation and load development I might have done it about a half dozen times possibly more. On the other hand I have shot several five shot groups at or under an inch and they are alot more doable than the ten by a long shot for me. It might be more doable on a more regular basis while using a dedicated benchrest rifle but I have never used one but it is also only an assumption as I would not know.
