Do you think pure beeswax would be too stiff to use as a grease cookie.

You might like to get a copy of Paul Matthews little book titled "Loading the Black Powder Rifle Cartridge" he goes into considerable detail on the subject of grease cookies and what to make them from.

The best I have read on grease or wax wads is in Philip Sharpe's Complete Guide to Handloading. The easiest formula is 1 pound beeswax, 4 oz. colloidal graphite and 4 oz. castor oil. I have found this graphite on Amazon but have not tried it yet, but plan to. According to Sharpe the beeswax needs to be softened with some additive. Let us know how you make out if you try it.

For my muzzleloaders I use a combination of beeswax and mink oil or bear or deer talow, I will probably just make up a stiffer batch.

For 45 and 50 caliber guns I have had good luck with pig fat and bees wax (50-50). When I lived in Germany you could buy the pig fat at most markets, it is called SchweineSchmalz in German. Haven't looked for it here in CONUS.

If you can't find bear oil, pig fat, whale oil, giraffe tallow etc why not just try SPG thinned down with jojoba oil or some other thinning softening agent like castor oil, works fine.

Is this "cookie" for black powder loads?  I think Phil Sharpe was refering to wads used for smokeless loads..reducing throat wear in jacketed bullet rifle loads...I have tried such wads under .22 Donaldson Wasp loads..never could get any accuracy..if I ever did try them again I think I would take a page from the B.P. shooters & place a thin paper wad between bullet base & wad.  For black..I have used SPG..but have made up various soft..some extreemly so lubes that do contain beeswax...plan on trying these out this year with paper-patch loads.

Yes for black powder, under a paper patched bullet. I mixed up a batch with bees wax, mink oil and olive oil yesterday that I think will work great.

I use beeswax and lard for my BPP grease cookies- but I only use grease cookies when shooting dirty, with blowtubing (military rifle comps won't allow wiping between shots).  When wiping, I don't use them - accuracy is worse than without grease cookies when wiping, no need for them if you clean everything out after each shot.
