A few years ago, I was given a large quantity of zinc contaminated lead. Using a dedicated pot. I used the "skim the sludge off" technique and used it to cast 44-40 bullets for my old '92 Winchester. This rifle is only used at short range, up to and including 50 yds. The bullets look decidedly "zinc like" but they work well, are accurate at the range I use them at and, a few thousand rounds later, have given no problems.
All this leads to the obvious question: what exactly is wrong with having zinc in your lead?

The bands don't fill out and there is NO way to get them to fill. They fill in some areas but, not in others.

When I had that problem, I washed the mold, I washed and used mold release, I used as high a heat as the pot would generate, I cast fast and slow, I tried everything I could think of. I spent hours and hours trying to find a way to get the bands to fill out. Many, many days and hours later, I through it away!!!!!

I don't think that there can be a lot of zinc left in my "rubbish" pot after repeated sludge skimming. I have used two different 44-40 moulds: one a Lyman  and the other an old Lee which is intended for use with liquid alox. In both cases, casting definition has been fine and the bands have filled out.

I am no expert on metal alloys but I have never been able to get match grade Schuetzen bullets with any amount of zinc. The bands do not fill out and I cannot get what I consider to be match grade bullets. I can get foulers but even for practice ,(especially benchrest practice) you need decent bullets. For short range informal shooting they might be OK. One thing on my list of things to do is to test the zinc contaminated "not-match-grade" bullets against match grade bullets to see how much difference it actually makes. A preliminary test last month with some questionable bases proved that the less than perfect bases definitely do not shoot as well. I now have some bullets with good bases but less than perfect bands that I will test.
Will post the results.
