Safe Smokeless loads for modern 40-60 Hepburn?

Heading out to Quigley soon. Targets from 350-800 yds  Lyman cast Bullet HNDBK loads do not include the 40-60 Maynard, which has less volumetric capacity than 40-65 or 40-70 SS. Using a 400 grain Saeco-like cast bullet. So far tried 21 Gr 4754 and 24 gr 4198 so so only at 500-600 yds. Input welcome

Emmett,

My grand daughter shot a 40-60 Maynard in a Ballard at the Quigley last summer. We used the SAECO 740 with FFF Swiss and it worked quite well for her. If you are interested in a BP load PM me. Hope to see you there.

Was there an issue with double base powders such as 5744 at Quigley??
Maybe rules changed.

issue is: no over powder wads of any kind with a double base powder-- SM's Ballard grenaded with 21 grains of 5744 at the Q and rumor has it a trapdoor with an OPW failed at that range a few years ago--not sure of powder   My wife's 1903a3 (not a low numbered pre WW1 1903) flew apart with a published, reduced load of 5744--hence my caution.

I've got a couple of smokeless loads that I use to fireform my 40/60Maynard using H4198 and RL7. I will look them up tonite and post them.
I use 66 grains of Old Ensford and a 400 grain BACO money bullet in mine.

After initial firefoming I use 21 grains of RL7 or 23 grains of H4198 with a 400 grain Rcbs Spitzer, then it's all Black powder.

I use trail boss in this sort of loads. Take case mark where the bottom of bullet will sit. Seated depth , mark the brass. Fill case full to the seated depth. Weigh trail boss full to base of bullet. Now divide x .70
This 70% is where you start.

I use it on all in this area of loads. it will be light.
