Interesting gun--judging by the sights, seems more of a dual-purpose hunting & target rifle than a strictly target gun.  Once had a tang sight, but many hunting rifles of the time were also provided with those.  Ought to be worth the price, but I wonder how long it's been listed; info these auction sites take care to conceal.

Can you tell if Rowe's book is based on the Jerry Swinney's history of NYS gunmakers?

I am looking for references to the makers of percussion target rifles in the post-1865 period.

Is it exclusively Amercian makers you are looking for? If your interest extends to British Gunmakers and long range target rifles, I have articles on Joseph Whitworth, Alexander Henry, George Gibbs, John Rigby.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) and many articles. Note also the information on Charles E. Overbaugh, New York, for a fascinating rifle attributed to him.

Yes, I am still searching for info on William B. Farrow from Holyoke, Mass.  Carey is the only reference so far.

Also, I have a cased Brockway rifle I want to learn about.

Is there any forum that discusses these rifles?
You've read "The Muzzle Loading Caplock Rifle" from cover to cover?  I found more than 100 in that book.

Rowes. book is an excellent reference on NY made guns but leaves a bit to be desired in gun descriptions.
As an aside, muzzleloading shoot at Old Saratoga last week only had 3 slug gun shooters.( I'm shooting a Bresien '41 cal.) Consensus thought is that there may only be around 100 or so slug shooters left as no new guns are being made.

This is a cool old photograph, I like this photo; it's the 1st Company Massachusetts Sharpshooters organized in Lynn, Massachusetts and mustered in for three years service on September 2nd 1861. The company was originally recruited for Colonel Hiram Berdan's sharpshooter regiments, but when the men were informed that they would lose their enlistment bounty, they declined to join Berdan's regiments and instead remained independent;

I'm still working on the Willard Milton Farrow biography.  One of the things I learned is that one of Farrow's brother-in-laws is in the above photo.  I don't know which guy he is.  He was killed in 1864, in The Wilderness battle.
