	Since the Civil War, crossed rifles have been used to identify infantryman. Based on its size, my guess is that you've got a hat insignia for an infantry unit raised in Brattelboro, Vermont. The significance of the pine tree is uncertain. Nowadays, Maine is "The Pine Tree State", but who knows what the local terminology might have been in the 1860's. Bill Lawrence

Quite true, but it seems peculiar for any military unit, even in the state militia, to be identified with the name of a specific city. There are a jillion "Pine Tree" this or thats; for ex., I attended Pine Tree High School (though I'd like to forget it!). There's the famous Pine Tree Club & Range in Johnston, NY, and so forth. Suspect name refers to some local shooting or fish & game club in that city, probably long defunct by now.

	There was a prestigious range in Brattelboro Vermont. The pin may have been a club pin or part of the club uniform. 40 Rod

	Brockway was in Bellows Falls which is 25 miles from Brattleboro. From what Roberts related in his writings this was a "hot" area in the late 1800's for target shooting.

	a search of old posts on this site was interesting. both Farrow and French were in Brattleboro 1889 - 1890. following the thread also mentions Farrow spending time in Tn. I found the pin in an antique store in Tn. years ago.

	Vermont has always been beautiful but I started seeing a culture change ever since Ben & Jerry started making ice cream there.
