my vices of the past are costing me rifles in the future.

dont feel bad ! Nice bullards like that come along every 15-20 years Wink i know how you feel. My friends tell me if I would stop buying crummy guns that are just so-so I could buy some really nice guns- i usually find myself just watching guns like this go outside my reach.

The bore is not good.  Bullards may be rare, but that one is very much overpriced.  What would it be worth if it had a liner?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I'm always confused at gun listings that say something to the effect of "bore should clean up". If the seller really believed that, then why not spend a few minutes and clean it up?
I've had several guns I thought the bore would clean up, and after some work they looked pretty good. But I've had far more I hoped would clean up, but didn't.

That's a great looking Bullard, and I'd love to own it. But if the bore doesn't clean up it's too expensive. If by chance it does, it's not a bad price.

If I were in the market, I'd take the chance on that bore description just based on the rarity of the rifle. I'd have pretty good unfounded confidence that the bore would clean up to good deer hunting accuracy even though it's stocked for target shooting.

Just a vague suspicion, but the barrel may have been messed with a bit. It has the sound of an off length, and I'd consider asking the seller to remeasure the length just for curiosity. It also looks like the crown may have been touched up just a bit. If really needed, I'd consider rebarreling and keeping the original untouched. It looks to be in relatively nice condition, and I believe well under two hundred of them have been documented to still be around. Common as hen's teeth.

I would agree on making sure they measured the barrel properly! Often bigger gun dealers like this use employees to do their auctions who don't know guns well. Looking at the 27.5" length, I'd guess they may have measured to the face of the receiver, and not the rear face.
But that crown sure looks unmessed with to me. I see nothing unusual there, and front sight distance to muzzle looks right.

Only fun conversation Vall, you'd have much, much more experience looking over original classics than I would. The front sight location does look right, that's sort of why I suspect the barrel length may have been mismeasured.

It does have the look like someone swung the end of the barrel into something. I can't look at the listing right now, but I thought I saw a small radius cut into the end of the rifling, where maybe it might have originally been flat with the end of the muzzle. It's probably just me. Still, an uncommon configuration of a relatively rare rifle, if I can find my round tuit, I should dig up my book and see if it's listed.

If the new owner of this rifle is a member here, somewhere in my stash I have a set of 32-40 Bullard dies with forming die. if they are interested.
