Where do all the original scope mounts go?

What reason would anyone have for separating a scope from it's original mounts? But it happens very often, as with these two Stevens newly-listed on ebay.  Seller makes no claim of originality, so they are what they are.

In Marlin mounts: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links);

Mossberg...?: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

The 740 scope has a very odd front mount. It's a Win 8X front mount, somehow graphed to a standard width dove tail. The 8X scopes, used a .600 wide dovetail. I wish I could see the bottom of the front mount.

At least the one with the Marlin rear mount has the better 4 point click adjustable mount. Owner may have found that mount more to his liking before these scopes were considered collectable.
Back in the 70's and 80's I bought a bunch of the old short 17"-22" external adjust scopes at local gun shows for under $20 often. Must have had 20-30 of them in a footlocker under my loading bench! One of my few good investment choices! Still have some of the better ones, but sold the rest when they got stupid priced.

The steel Marlin mount is without doubt the best of all these similar ".22 scopes." But except for the clicks, if you think you need them (I really don't, preferring the smooth rotation of mounts without them), I wouldn't rate this Marlin superior to the original Stevens, esp. the later ones with the large flat "buttons" fitted loosely into the ends of the screws.

The Marlin 3 point was not better than the Stevens. But I think the improved Marlin 4 point shown in the auction was better.

Never had or used any of the Marlin mounts, so didn't know this distinction between them.  But have shot a LOT with Lyman 5As in Lyman's first type of 4-point.  Found that sometimes if tube was accidentally moved up or down slightly it would "stick" in that position, due to the "equal & opposite" spring pressure.  Can't happen with the "unbalanced" thrust exerted by a 3-point, which is why, I presume, all makers changed eventually to that design.

But I'd still prefer the Marlin to any of the pot-metal 3-point designs!

Marlin offered their scope as the #1 and the #2, but it was the same scope. Only difference was #1 is 3 point or #2 is 4 point rear scope mount. The 4 point had not only 4 point mount, but also finer adjustments, and since it was click adjustment it didn't have locking rings that the 3 point #1 had.
I don't mind clicks if they're fine, but coarse clicks can be an issue.
