Reloading for Winchester 1885 38-55

Does reloading for a Miroku Winchester 1885 38-55 have any unique challenges compared to a 45-70? I just found one. I have heard a number of stories about chamber and brass problems with 38-55; are brass walls especially thin? I have also heard that it is a fine caliber.

Should be perfectly fine. Nothing special about the brass. Don't recall whether it uses the 'standard' length brass or the long brass, but easily determined. Load it up with 45-47gr of 2F Swiss, a 0.060" wad and a 300-335gr bullet and you should be fine. My 28" long  full-octagon barrel 'hunter' model was a 15" twist, so couldn't shoot a very long bullet. The 335gr Lyman is about as heavy as it will handle. Best shooting bullet in mine was the 325gr BACo Money bullet.

If using Starline brass it is a good idea to anneal the necks before shooting but that goes any of Starline's brass.

Send 'texasmac' on the ASSRA forum a PM whether the rifle is chambered for the 3.120 or 3.125 case. Starline has both lengths

Or do a chamber cast if you can.
That will show the length, and also
what freebore/leade dimensions are.

Being as it is new commercial production (and before Dick Trenk talked Pedersoli into making theirs the original "long" length) I would bet that this is what you will find:

What would be your intended use if you were to buy it and it being the bigger question before one could actually provide you with an honest answer.

About some years ago Mike Venturino did a review and test of one of the Miroku 38-55. he reported a .377 groove diameter and excellent accuracy.

Here is another thread about the rifles here on ASSRA.

With regard to cartridge length, it was Winchester who created the problem/confusion.  Since Miroku is now making Winchesters my guess is that they are producing the short chamber for 2.08 cartridges.  Original 38-55's and modern made replicas are using the correct 2.18-9" camber dimensions.

The chambers on all modern production rifles are cut SAAMI spec., the Mirukos easily chamber the long case.

Wow!! Did not realize that Starline offered a 38-55 case over 3" in length.  Wink
Am guessing you meant their 'short' 38-55 case at 2.08" or 'long' one at 2.125".

This brings up another question, slightly off topic. The 38-55 has SAAMI specs, the 40-65 does not. How many different 40-65 chambers are in production today?

Hmmm, a typo on the cartridge length.  Better review the words before posting!

There are a number, but not sure about what would be 'production'. The reamer used by C. Sharps in my High Wall had a 'shorter' freebore. The one in my current 40-65 Hepburn is a 'DanT' spec with a longer freebore. From what I've heard from others, both Shiloh & CPA use a 'shorter' freebore version. All use the standard 2.10" case length.
There is the "Ron Long 40-65'. Don't recall the specifics.
