Marcot's book has some good pictures. But unfortunately I don't have my copy right now! Loaned it to my son in law recently, and probably wont see it until he's done drooling over the pictures!

A 25# Roller definitely caught my interest. Looking forward to seeing it.

I found the picture and blog on the build. It was Gene Cordner who built this beast.

Holy cow! That barrel is so large it makes the #1 action look like a #4 Rolling Block!! Unusual stock design for a benchrest gun!

Not a big fan of the way the upper tang was bent down. I prefer Remington's version where upper tang stayed straight, and lower was curved to make a pistol grip.
This is one I'm working on presently. A military .43 Spanish that I swapped in a new style Remington Rolling Block lower tang and stock to:

Well it will be a .40 caliber, as I have a GM 1:16" twist .40 cal. barrel. Either .40-70SS or .40-65 Win., with a 34" #3.5 barrel.

I have had quite a few single shots over the years ,Ballard, high walls rollers, but nothing ever like this.I wanted something different and was shopping for a big barrel for a percussion build.
I came across this one in 32/40 and I did not want to change it into a percussion barrel. This is why I will build it back into a cartridge rifle . I will garintee that it is the only one in my neck of the woods.

I've seen quite a few single shot target rifles with extremely large barrels. Not as big as that 25 lb. barreled gun you pictured, but probably 15-16 lb. barrels.
I am fascinated by them also, and keep telling myself I want to build up a big heavy bench gun similar to the ones I've seen at some gun shows. I don't want to go so large that the shank has to be offset to work though.

Barry Darr built a 32-40 with a 3 inch diameter barrel and it was up for sale a few years back but someone bored out the barrel and it ended up being a 40 cal if memory serves right and they completely destroyed its collector value. I believe Bud Welch was the one who found the need to ruin it.

That's an absolute shame! Always hoped to own a B. Darr barreled gun some day! Without his bore it would be worthless to me!

I have a B.W.Darr barrel on an old English Martini action. It is a 32-40 and it is a jewel.

Long Range Barry is a very close and dear friend and he is on this site. If you send him a PM he still has his records and he can look up your barrel for you. He goes under old7groove and it might be something you would like to have to keep with your rifle.

John, are you sure Barry Darr goes as "old7groove" on here? The last time he answered a question on this forum he answered it under the name "7groove "
There is a person who goes by "old7groove", and I sent him a question eons ago about Darr barrels and never got a response. If both are Barry, then he isn't responding to any PM on the "old7groove" name.

Vall he just recently responded to his Low Wall that was pictured as being a 32-40 in another post actually being a 28-30 using old7groove.
I believe he was shooting the 3 day San Diego ISSA Regional over the weekend so it might take sometime for him see his PM's and to respond.

The largest barrel I made was a 32-40 four inch diameter, 30 inches long weighing 105 lbs. fitted to a FBW action, the completed rifle tipped the scales at 115 lbs. Problem with a barrel of this size and weight is the inability to quickly hold off for conditions. I later milled the barrel to 3.625 octagon before selling it to someone who just couldn't live without it. It was later rebored to 45-70 by another barrelmaker.

Val - let me know what questions you may have of my barrels.

Shiloh makes 25lb barrels, but you will likely have to buy the whole rifle to get one  Smiley

"That Gordner rifle in this thread is one awful looking mess."
I agree. Be aware that current ASSRA rules allow barrells no more than 2" in diameter or across the flats.

Jeff does that also hold true fore those not considered to meet the Traditional rules. The reason I ask is I can't remember the size of 40 Rod's Big Dog rifle barrel and I am just to damn lazy to go and look.

John built the "Big Dog" to be "legal" for ASSRA competition. But whether he was attempting to meet the "traditional" classification standards or not I don't recall---it might have been in a .32 short variation.
Corky Taylor also built a heavy bench SS for ASSRA competition. I don't know if he ever completely finished it before he moved to FL, some years back. I think he had it at the range the last time I saw him there, but was still working on load development.
As I recall it was built in a wildcat cartridge a 44 mag tapered down to 357.  sort of like a 38 cal version of a 32 Miller Short.

Bought this as a reciever, and barrel about 5 years ago. It is a #3 in 45-70.
Ed larralde put the reciever and barrel together, barry darr did the rifleing.
This is a very heay rifle have never wieghed it.
Shoots extremely well with duplex loads.
