A friends father brought home from WW2 a Schutzen Rifle The rifle was picked up from a pile of surrendered rifles in the town he was stationed in after the war.The rifle is in very good condition the only markings I can find are Original System Grothe the caliber is 8.15X46R.It has some minor damage to the stock and some rust.He is thinking of selling the rifle and is looking for a fair value.Thank You Jay Parisi

I believe the front sight got damaged on the trip home from Europe. The barrel length is 32" and the rifle weighs about 17 lbs.Jay

This is a nice original rifle with original case-hardened action. The rifle looks like it also has its rear schuetzen sight (these are often missing). I can't tell I f the specks on the barrel are lint or in the metal finish.

Personally, I place a third of a target rifles value in the condition of the bore.

800 to 1200 would be my estimate, if the bore is good.

Anybody notice the stud on the left side of the action? Is that a part of the design, or is it/could it be used as an anchor for a breech seating tool?
Nice lookin' rifle, and damn well worth getting back up and shooting.

That's the end of a pin, and part of the design.

I'd buy those all day long in the $800-$1200 range and resell them! I haven't seen one in that high condition go that cheap in many years!

Lack of engraving hurts value. Presence of tang site adds value. I don't consider myself an expert, but I follow the online auctions and I own a small collection of 14 German, Austrian & Swiss Schuetzen rifles. Most are very good condition, some engraved. Guess I am cheap never paid more than 1200. More power to you if you exceed that price.
Thanks Mike

I paid $1500 for mine, which was nearly pristine with matching numbered rear aperture sight and 4-way front sight.

Jay,
Can you please show us a picture of the action, on both sides, with the lever down?

Thank you,

Frank

My experience pretty much echo's marlinguys.  I haven't seen one for less than about $1500 in years if it's in any kind of condition at all.

Yours appears to me to be the Grothe variation on the Haenel/Aydt.  That action or one of its variations pretty much became the standard after about WWI.  Probably most on here are aware of the series "Alte Scheibenwaffen", an excellent source of info on about all things Schuetzen during it's hey day....and the photography is stunning.

I haven't had one in probably 8-10 years, but the last one I sold then was similar condition and sold quickly at $1300 back then. From the auction results I see (not asking prices) they're doing much better than $1200. And so few have that sight, and I've seen the sights go $200-$250 alone to those who need them to complete the guns.

With the sight and the case color condition, I'd expect it to bring between $1500 and $2000.

If I was to guess a single number, I'd say $1650.

Vall, thanks for the answer to my query of yesterday. I"m not too versed on these interesting rifles, so I asked to help with my learning more about 'em. I'd be willing to snag one if it came at a price, and in a caliber I could live with. More a stalking gun than a full-on offhand rifle would be my choice.
Again, thanks for the answer.

I replaced the pin head foresight for $125 and a much better diopter for $650 on the last one I bought, considering the Martini action rifle was a bargain bottom price ... in much better condition than the one on the post - wood, metal, checkering and carving
