Trapdoor model 1878, cracked tang

I looked this over pretty good and don't think the crack in the tang is really going to affect shooting this old rifle. It's one I have not loaded for or shot yet but would like to. Am I missing anything?

Interesting, I have not seen that problem on a trapdoor before now.  While I don't think that crack would affect safety in any way, I would expect that the slight bit of movement would affect accuracy a bit with degrading performance as the action moved around and beat up the wood.  I replaced a tang/breechplug once, building a rifle from parts, an original Springfield part timed perfectly and was an easy drop-in; the H&R part sold by Dixie GW (years ago) was not an exact replacement and took a lot of hand fitting.

I'd fix it. Silver solder.

An original replacement part is $40 at S&S.  I would get one.

FWIW - your trapdoor is a Model 1873. The "3" is very often so deeply stamped that it looks like an "8". It's my understanding that there were some design changes in 1878, but never a formal model designation.

I had considered looking for a replacement but figured it would never match. Hadn't considered silver solder. Some options for sure.

I'd replace it too, as eventually the stock will wear loose from recoil. Best to repair it while the stock is still tight.

As Marlinguy said replace it. No matter what you do to repair it solder, braze, weld the crack will always show.
The part is not hard to change and most are in good condition. To be honest the finish on the cracked tang is nicer than the finish on the block and hammer.

What's it take to get them out?

Remove the barreled action from the stock and open the action clamp in a padded vise and unscrew the tang with an adjustable wrench. To install pad the wrench with a strip of brass or copper and screw in until the upper flat is level with the receiver.

No on the Silver Solder !!!  It take's too much heat and will never be blued like the rest of the metal !!!

TIG weld the two part's and you can control the outcome better !!!

Good Luck !!!

The parts were made interchangeable. I changed one out once and the replacement screwed right into place and the breech block locked properly.
