New Jersey Schuetzen Park

I ran across these 2 photos I took in 2002 on a trip to N.Y. to see ground zero.  I believe it was in Jersey City.  Can anyone shed some light on this place and any history?  As I recall the whole place was fenced off at that time.

Regards, Joe

Here is a brief history of Schützenpark;

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links))

I was born and raised an hour south of there and used to go there with my parents for the German-American Volksfest. The city has changed dramatically over the years. The club was the host range of the New York Schützen Korps.

I moved away last year, but I just ran into the director of the Brooklyn Schützen  Korps at the MACA Show in Baltimore, and he told me the entire place was up for sale.

This, I believe, is a Schuetzen Gallery somewhere in New Jersey. The name on the building appears to be "Otto Dibelk, Kleiner Schuetzen Park." I assume that's Otto standing in front.

Per the wiki info, Walnut Hill was just north of Schuetzen Park. Here is the map. There aren't any outdoor ranges in the area these days. Cherry Ridge, the ANJRPC range (state association) is well north along the NJ/NY border and Central Jersey (a huge club) is about 40mi SE.

Not sure "Kleiner Schützen Park" was in NJ. 100 years ago there were alot of German shooting clubs in the US.

I was a member of Central Jersey for the last 22 years. I lived 18 miles away, but I dropped it since I moved to PA last year. Old Bridge has an outdoor range as well.

Wilhelm,

The only indication I have about New Jersey is that the beer advertised on the window is "Wm. Peter's Lager Beer," which was brewed in Union City (Union Hill), New Jersey. Many of these old shooting clubs are lost to posterity.

Thanks for the link JW.  If I'm reading correctly, this was the home of the Union Hill shooting facility?

It is my understanding that some of the park is still there. Much of it was lost to either the Holland or lincoln tunnel I can't remember which.
