Looking for comments, recommendations, etc, concerning bullets and bullet molds for a 44-77 Sharps that my Ballard is chambered for. Any advice or thoughts are appreciated. BTW I will be shooting Black in the rifle. Also groove and/or paper patch.

You might ask on the Shiloh Sharps forum. There are a number of 44-77 BPTR/BPCR shooters over there. There are also a few 44-100 shooters, like Tom Klinger, who shoot nothing but black and also shoot PP and breech-seated bullets. Tom just reported some excellent results with his original 44-100 Hepburn Creedmoor rifle using PP & B-S'ing. Anything that works as a bullet in a 44-100 should work well in a 44-77.

Lynn, I started out shooting my #1 Remington Rolling Block with a Lee mold that is a hollow base nose pour design. I figured I'd get a better mold made later if it didn't work well, but it's worked great! Lee stopped making the 445-290, but it can still be found easily on Ebay. It's slightly small, but the hollow base lets it bump up easily and works well. Cheap at around $25 when they do show.
I also have a Lee 445-288 that is a blunt nose and works almost as well, but not for log distances. The BC is similar to a full wadcutter, and it falls off quickly after a few hundred yards.
These lighter bullets will work better with your Ballard's slow twist rate than what most recently manufactured guns use.

My 1929 Ideal book tells me that their molds for the 44-70/77 are 446187 at 470 gr, 446109 at 365 gr, and 446110 hollow point at 315 gr.  The first and last mentioned were for 44-90 also, but I THINK that -109 was the original standard for 44-77.  If you haunt ebay long enough, you may find one of these.

Thanks, a lot of good information here. I will keep my eyes open for that Lyman 446109 and I like the bullet offered by Sageoutfitters. I like that you can buy bullets, test them, and if good buy a mold.
Vall, as the luck of the timing would be have it one of the Lee molds was for sale on eBay and ending today and I was able to purchase it for ~$20 including shipping. When it gets here I will try it out, load up 20 rounds with the cases I just bought here in the forum and go shot them with Rick up in Spicer, MN

So many of the .44-77's in use today are newly built guns, or guns rebuilt with newer barrels. So much of the data and molds used for casting are for the faster twist rates these newer barrels have. The bullets that these faster twist barrels stabilize easily, wont be the best choice for a .44-77 Ballard original barrel with it's 1:20" twist rate.

Of course Vall you are absolutely correct. My 4 1/2 Ballard has a measured twist of 1:20" and old Mr Greenhill states a 44 cal bullet 1.25" long should be ideal. I would guess that is a bullet, depending on design and alloy, of about 380 to 400 grains.

When that Lee mold shows up I'll cast a few and load a few and then give the rifle a chance.
