Tapered bullet advice

I have a barrel with a 0.277" bore and a 0.293" groove diameter, 14" twist.  Accurate Molds has a "125T" tapered design that should be right for the twist, but I do not know quite how to specify the band diameters.  I have never used a tapered bullet before so don't know what kind of force it will take to seat it in the barrel.  I'd like to use 5% tin to start with but am open to experienced advice on that also.  If some of you breech-seaters out there can help me out I will get a mould ordered.  I have just begun shooting this rifle and only have 287373 which casts 0.288" using linotype.  I'm going to make a bumping die to try some larger diameters.  I will be using only smokeless powder. Thanks for any input.

Any compentent Mould maker should be able to provide you with the best advice as that is their realm of expertice. If they get it wrong it is then upon them to correct it and if you specify it you simply own it and if wrong you will have to correct it.

I might also add there is nothing wrong with breech seating a cylindrical bullet if you happen to have a mechanical seater. In my own personal opinion I have achieved better accuracy by their use over a tapered bullet design and what I prefer to use. It has some valuable advantages over a tapered designed bullet that I could share with you in a personal e-mail when time allows. Just send me a PM with your e-mail address and request should you have an intrest and I will get it off to you.

I'm very curious as to what cartrige you have and what type of action.

From you dimentions, your grooves are .008 deep. The original type 32/40 grooves are only .003 deep and modern 30 caliber is .004 deep.

If your lands are wide (as in even land and groove widths) a bullet will be very hard to BS and it will deform the bullet quite a bit.

The action is important because, some don't have a good anchor point for a BSer to get a good purchase on. Such as the Martini.

It's a Stevens 44-1/2 28-30.  Wide grooves, narrow lands.  I wish I knew why the grooves are cut so deep.  The rifle, probably made in 1903, has seen little use so maybe that's why.
