Print Post
hello all
i am not having much fun making the 40-70 neck sizer die work for these longer cases for my ballard.. my question to all is if some is making a longer die body so i can use the positive adjustment stop ring that comes with the extra length. lyman makes the .45 die in a long and short.........wheres the .40?
regards

Talk to CH4D. They will make anything you want in the way of a die. Won't be fast or cheap, but you'll get what you ask for.

It is called a .416 Remington....
Most FL sizing dies size the neck about .007 too small so the various .416 dies might work for your neck die.  The body of the magnum round is large enough to clear your case body.
You will be able to use an expander ball if you prefer that too.

A Lee FL die body was listed at about $14  or you can buy a used set of dies on ebay.

Hmmm......
a .416 remington, i wish i had a cartridge to view. there is a lee factory crimp die on ebay for $11.50. i can't tell by looking at it if it would be long enough to touch shell holder, or have enough threads to set lock ring at top of my rock chucker ram to control length of size, the price sure is tempting! i will look at a saami dwg. i called ch4d, their bushing die is $66...not too bad.
guess i need to do more homework.
regards.

The .416 Remington case is 2.850 long.

I am not sure why you are looking at the Lee FCD because they do not size the neck they only crimp the case mouth.

I just checked my very similar but shorter Lee FL die in .416 Taylor.
The sizing section of the neck is .436 diameter so it will not be small enough to adequately size for a .408 or smaller bullet unless your brass is really thick.

KFW,
What loading press do you have?
My RCBS Rock Chucker has a threaded 7/8-14 insert in it
that can be backed off. I think it is 1 1/8 or 1 1/4" thread on its O.D.. A person can use large flat washers under its flange to secure it in a higher position.
By doing so, this will effectively back off
the 40-70 neck die, perhaps far enough to serve ok
on those 40-85 or 40-90 cases.

Just get a CH4D bushing necksizer, the bushings are available in different sizes.  Much easier than trying to make do with something else.

CH4D stock item about 60 bucks and few days shipping. Were you will spend more is buying extra size bushings at 12 dollars each. Start sizing perfect want to tweak neck tension with a little bit different size. It's trial by feel small difference one bushing to another.  You can even adjust tension for different brass neck wall thickness.  Send Dave at CH4D fired case and a bullet he will get the bushing very close first try.

Neck size only way to go for fixed.

well gentlemen,
based on your wisdom, ch4d is the way to go here. since i have two  .40 cal ballards it makes sense to go this route.

thank you all

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Never saw a mention of which way you wanted to move the neck? Is it too large and you need to size it down? Or too small and want to expand it?

marlin guy and rustyrlex
i missed your recent reply...yes i want to reduce case diameter. the 41 mag may work, but die is to short to use with out cobbling up sort sort of positive, repeatable ram travel stop? split collar w/screws or open sided u-shape sleeve...dunno?
thanks
