What's wrong with keeping it as close as possible to the original configuration?  (Other than the addition of scope blocks.)

Hot Rod Ballards made me think of this.  It's kinda neat and is definitely a Hot Rod Wink

I would simply look at Marlin Ballard rifles and see the various options you might enjoy. Then build that around your Merrimack. I think a #9 Union Hill style would make a nice little .22 rimfire rifle.

These are all Union Hill Ballards. The top one modified with a palm rest and a larger Swiss buttplate:

Top one her is a Schoyen style. Middle a Creedmoor style, and bottom an engraved Union Hill:

Top one another Schoyen style. Middle a Union Hill shotgun butt. Bottom a Rigby style engraved:

Poor picture, but these are:
Cased Schoyen top. #6 Schuetzen middle (in .22RF Short) #3F Fine Gallery bottom in .22Long.

This Merwin and Bray (Ball & Williams) is a nice handling gun in .38. Maybe do yours up as a period sporting rifle.

And so much better in person!

Not to mention the "Three Amigo's"........ Vall, Ed and John. Ed and John, also had their collections all set up together with Vall's. One long row of single shots. My jaw is sore this morning!!!

There were also a bunch of HW (both SST and DST) LW and Stevens for sale. A great show for a SS guy!!!

You guys have all the nice stuff , I was at a gun show on the weekend only two single shots in the whole building Stevens favorited 659.00 in 22 Rd the other was a Stevens 44 1/2 in 22 hornet for 750.   The hornet was a parts gun it had mis matched wood and some unknown barrel on it. The hammer was bobbed for cleaning rod approach pricing is in Canadian funds

I had Dave Crossno build me a .22 rf "hot rod #3 Ballard" - Douglas 1-14" twist barrel with self-cocking / speed-locked / bobbed / drilled and lightened hammer, Eric Johnson extractor, and Winchester 52D chamber. Also has coil a spring adjuster that replaces the factory "C" spring. Trigger pull is adjusted to 4 oz, with no creep. The rifle also has his straight action pistol grip stock.

Sounds very nice! I'd love to hear more about how they replaced the C spring with a coil spring! Or even better, see a picture!!!

The C spring replacement was copied from one on a CC Johnson Ballard. It is basically a coil spring with a plunger. The plunger is also an over travel stop for the trigger. The tension from the coil spring on the trigger adjusts the sear/cock notch engagement.
I have another custom .22 Ballard with a similar C spring replacement. It is speed-locked and has a custom trigger with a built-in shoe. Unfortunately there are no markings on the gun to indicate who did the work on it. This one also has spring installed in the breechblock that holds the lever at 90 degrees when the breechblock is lowered. I assume it was done to aid in re-loading. This Ballard will be going to Mike at Crossno Gun Service soon to have the Pope-style hammer conversion done.
