I apologize if this issue has been discussed previously....I've gone back 3 years in the Forum and found no mention.

Ballard Rifle & Cartridge 38-55
Highwall; plan to load fixed black powder.  Which case length....the 2.08", or the 2.125"?

Thank you....Pearre Chase

You could also call the Wyoming Armory and ask them. They may still have the build records for the Cody rifles.

Also, if like my short chambered rifle, if you close the chamber on a 38-55 long case it will fold over the mouth very clearly if it is the short chamber.

I agree with Joe....................either make a cerrosafe casting or a chamber pound cast with a casing and pure lead.  I think very seldom will two rifles have the "exact" same case length and you'd be much better served if you trim your cases to fit your rifle.  Kind of like asking for a load for your specific rifle and caliber.  What works for mine might not work for yours.

The correct length for the 38-55 is 2.125 (actually about 2.128" - 2.129").  Winchester screwed up things some years ago and produced about 15 million cases of the wrong length so they started chambering the 38-55 rifles they produced after that in 2.08" length.  This article is worth the read:
