	The hinge pin in the OP seems like the best way to guess between the two. I learned more about telling them apart in than post than I had a clue about before. Thanks for putting that up. When I saw that post I went to the safe to figure out what I had. I had 3 44 actions, one with a trigger that muddied the water a bit. They all have hinge pins so that was as far as I needed to look. I have shot the 38-55 a number of times with a light load of red dot (8-9 grains if I recall correctly). Load I found published somewhere that had a very low pressure. Primers were not altered (flattened) in the least. I have a few cases from the early 1900's, they used small rifle primers that might even be better as far as pressure is concerned. That would be another thread though.

Something like that, rather than risking the separation of original parts, is the better thing to do if you wish to shoot it. Special care must naturally be exercised to prevent accidental double charges, but I don't doubt you know that very well. Not a bad idea, however, to look for some newer cases!
