I now look at them a lot on the internet, and very seldom does a seller show the bottom, or the lever lowered.  If they did, it would be easy.

It's easy whether they do or don't, with a little--but not much!--experience; but I don't mean the kind acquired on the internet.  And for someone possessing the sharp eye of a professional designer, I should think it would be especially easy.

And I learned long ago that there will always be a class clown that tries to shoot holes (no pun) in whatever you are teaching.  It doesn't bother me.

But apparently, and unfortunately, it DOES; otherwise, why such defensiveness? In fact, a good bit it would seem, if it prompted you to search out a block-less Stevens receiver to "prove your point."  Which it really doesn't, as the presence or absence of the mortise in the frame required for a falling-block would tell the tale.

However, please accept my profuse apologies for any emotional distress my feeble attempt at levity might have caused you.  Guess I'm still trying to make up for my failure to win a spot on Comedy Central.

Nothing wrong with a tutorial that covers the basics.  I only buy at Gun Shows, where I can fondle the merch in person; having to make judgement calls on photos is one of the reasons I avoid the auction sites.

Thanks all!  I actually receive .1 cent for every reply and .2 cents for every like I get on this forum.  So I'm doing it for the money.  Just kidding

Oh, and I really don't get bothered by levity, even sarcastic types.  I just like being right, which I always am.  It's fun!  And profitable!

I have a Stevens 52. From the pics above one could almost be fooled into thinking it's a 44 1/2 by the close rear screw. I wish it was. I'd like to use this old 38-55 but just keep it in the safe instead.

I have regular model 44s in 38-55 and .22, they are as pictured in the OP.

So why does the 52 have a front half of a 44 and back half of a 44 1/2?

No, I'm not a collector and know almost nothing about this rifle other than I was told not to go to wal-mart and get ammo for it.

Any other 44 equipped with DS triggers would have that same screw--not unique to 52s.  (Not that I ever have or ever will be fortunate enough to own a 52.)

Pretty impressive selection you have for someone "not a collector"!

Belonged to my great grandfather. He shot matches around the New Braunfels area in the early 1900's. Even found scores from a "State Rifle Match" he attended in New Braunfels on May 16, 1904. I assume this is the rifle he was shooting.

Still a very active bunch of SS shooters around New Braunfels, I believe.

arlon,
Maybe this pic will help...
Bottom rifle frame:      44 action with standard integral cast lower tang
Middle rifle frame:       44 action with integral cast tang that has been milled away to accept a separate lower tang
Top rifle frame:           44 1/2 action with standard separate lower tang

Arlon,

Beautiful rifle. You know you could get another barrel made for it, the barrels swap out easily. If I had such a beautiful rifle, I'd get a 32-20 barrel made for it, and shoot it.  People who know the 44s better than I do can give you their take on whether to shoot a 38-55 model 44 - don't think that I would. I'd worry that it's a bit much for the action.

Which would also require a new extractor.  Hate to see any rifle of such quality dismembered, because the odds are high that somewhere down the line the original serial numbered parts will be separated--life is full of unforeseeable situations & accidents. This is one way barrels and other parts end up for sale on ebay.

Safe reloads could be concocted if Arlon really wants to shoot this rifle.  For that matter, I suspect most factory ammo is held to very conservative pressure levels in consideration of the many "old guns" still in circulation.  The high-speed loadings once available for this cartridge haven't been produced in decades.

Redsetter,
As soon as the picture was taken, those frames went right back into their respective trays to nestle with the rest of their respective parts.
And who knows just what the future may hold for them.   Wink
