I had a Ballard Model 2, 3-line receiver stamp, cast action in 44WCF stamped 44W on the original barrel.

Not unusual Powderman, if it was a Marlin Firearms Co. marked #2, as they usually did mark caliber. It's the earlier JM Marlin Ballards that rarely had the caliber marked above the chamber.
