Chris,

You should PM John Louis, he has been shooting 300 MP for some time with great results.  I use it in my 32-40 and I do OK but I don't practice enough and haven't messed with perfecting loads or seating depth.

I've already asked John and since he doesn't shoot fixed, he couldn't answer my question.

I've been shooting 300MP breech seated in my 1885 Highwall for several months now.  But before John Lewis got me set up doing that, I shot some fixed cartridges with 15 gr in .38-55 for that rifle.  I've got a Marlin lever action 1893 in .38-55 and I'm wondering what might be a safe load to shoot in that rifle.  The 15 gr fixed was giving me an average velocity of 1262 fps.  My Marlin is a 115 year old rifle, in excellent condition, with a smokeless marked barrel, so I "think" that load would be safe for it..................but with my lack of experience I just want some folks with more knowledge than I to give me an idea if it is............or recommend a different load.

Your rifle is made for ~40,000 CUP loads, depending on the weight of the bullet, your 15 gr load is well under 18K. Personally (me not you), I wouldn't be afraid to go up to 20 gr 300MP.

If you'll give me the weight of the bullet, barrel length and the COAL, I can run a QL pressure on it, if QL has 300MP. If not, I'll run a similar but, fast powder, like 296.

Frank, the COL is 2.545".  280 gr bullet.  26" Octagon barrel.  1893 Marlin.

Leo, is that with a lead bullet or jacketed?  I don't shoot jacketed, but I've read that with a 158 gr XTP, 18 gr 300MP will push the bullet at about 1839 fps.  I have yet to work with the 300MP and lead in my 1984C Cowboy Ltd.

Chris,
I don't have 300MP in my data base but, 296 and 4227 are faster powders. 300MP is a slower powder so, it would produce lower pressure for the same charge.

I forgot to ask thelength of your bullet so, I used 1.1. If it's shorter than that, the pressures will be a little lower.

20.0 gr Charges

H4227, 19,700 - 1493 fps
W 296, 20,900 - 1565 fps

Thanks, Frank.  Yes, the bullet is shorter than that..........though without going out to my shop, I couldn't tell you the length.  I made a mistake, it weighs 240 gr.  It's a Lazer Cast .38-55 bullet from Oregon Trails. How much less powder charge do you think would be safe?  I've shot it in a fixed case with 15 gr.  (but that was in my 1885 Highwall)

Chris,
Don't be affraid to use that 15 gr charge of 300MP in your 38/55. But, to maintain the same velocity and pressure as the BSed load, you would reduce it by 1/2 to 1 gr. The reason is that when the bullet is installed in the case, it reduces the capacity of the chamber.

In load developement, I would not be afraid to start at 14.5 and work my way to at least 20 gr, in .5 gr increaments. Stop at the best accuracy or where it gets uncomfortable on your shouder. Your pressure won't exceed 20,000 and your rifle is good for twice that amount.

I hope that helps,

Frank

Chris C,

My Marlin is like yours, and I use 18.6 grains with 158 grain jacketed bullets. I've tried many combinations of cast bullets and powders, but could never get good accuracy.
