Don't be affraid to use that 15 gr charge of 300MP in your 38/55. But, to maintain the same velocity and pressure as the BSed load, you would reduce it by 1/2 to 1 gr. The reason is that when the bullet is installed in the case, it reduces the capacity of the chamber.

Chris:  I have a 38-55 target copy from John Lewis that he shot a 1.43" group at 200yds.  His breech seated load was a Hoch 310gr 1:30 bullet with 16.6gr of Alliant Power Pro 300-MP powder.  So I loaded a fixed cartridge using the same bullet & powder charge with a magnum Federal 215 LR primer in a Uberti 1885 HiWall.  I ran the reload over the chronograph ... 1386 fps
Accordingly, I see no reason why this reload could not be used in your rifle

For comparison, I have a pet BP recipe for the same rifle with a 312gr Ideal 375300 bullet - 50gr Swiss FFg and the velocity is 1329fps

I have that same 200 yd target from John Lewis, John.  I keep it on the wall as an incentive.  Doubt I'll ever get there, but I'll keep tryin'.   Grin  I've shot as high as 17 gr, breech seated in my 1885, but my concern is not to hurt my beloved 1893.  She's 115 years old and I want to take good care of the old girl.

I just finished loading 15, 15.5, 16, 16.5 and 17 gr fixed.  Won't get to shoot them until Monday, but I feel comfortable now knowing they'll be safe.

Well, I loaded and shot 50 rounds, from 15 gr to 17 gr (10 shot targets) of Power Pro 300MP.  Was reasonably disappointed with the results, but I've tons of excuses and that's just what they are, "excuses" as to why I did so poorly.  But I didn't see any signs of excessive pressure on the primers and all was well.  (except my old shoulder had forgotten how unforgiving that danged curved steel butt on that old 1893 is)  I'm thinkin' I'll pull out my Past Magnum recoil shoulder pad for the next session.  Gettin' too old to pound my old messed up shoulder like that.  Grin
