.360 Rook

I could use some help preparing cartridges for a .360 Rook. Figuring to shorten .38 spl brass, but I don't know where to look for the bullet.  I have read that using a .357 wadcutter works, but I figure a heeled Bullet would work better. Suggestions welcomed.

If you get healed bullets it would be better  i.e. more original. However I use 38 special wad cutters and they work fine.

Groove diameters for 360 no5 rifles are all over the place. I have one which is marked; "for .360-.380 long cartridges". The groove diameter is .375" which makes it actually a .380 long. It is not accurate with hollow based wad cutters.
If yours is .372", it is a true .360 no5 and will probably shoot better with HBWC loads than with the healed bullet.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try the wad cutters first as it's the easier option and then see where to go.

SR if you find you have a groove diam of .360 or so and the 357-358 diameters don't work out  Western Bullet, Matt's Bullets and Buffalo Arms sell .360-.361 bullets about 150 gr. for the 38S&W which might be worth a trial.

Thanks for the suggestions/feedback. Shot some .38 long colt (healed) that did fine. Some commercial .38 spl Wadcutters did fine as well. All offhand. This little cutie is not a bench gun, but did fine at 150 yards. I didn't think those cartridges would go that far. Only a "pop."

Yeah, some of those "pipsqueek" cartridges can do well a lot farther away then we have been led to believe.  One I saw on youtube was a Marlin 32-20 at 5-600 yards.

I used to have a Woodward Martini rook rifle that would shoot cloverleafs at 50 yards with factory 38 Long Colt ammo.Temporary poverty forced me to sell it and I've missed it ever since.

I have this little Army/Navy tip-up rook marked ".360.#5.or .380".

The groove diameter is .369.

I use Hornady's swaged .38 hollow base wadcutters.  I back them with 10 gr FFFg so they bump up to fill the bore.  No leading, and they shoot to call offhand at 100 yards.

Inside every bright idea is the 50% probability of a disaster waiting to happen.

Smoke, your Army & Navy is a dead ringer for my Jeffery.  I believe it's Collingwood in his "Rook & Rabbit Rifle" book credits most of that make of rifle to W.C. Scott, regardless of the name on the top rib.  Good rifles and oh so cute.

States, glad you got yours up and runnin'!  Rook rifles are just cool.  Mine will keep a 3 lb. coffee can very nervous out to 300 yards.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Oh come on....everyone knows you need at least a 300 Win. Mag at 3200 fps and a 24X scope to hit anything beyond 300 yards.....  Wink

That kind of shooting is so much fun!!!!!!

Noticed your Rook bullet looks like my heeled 32-20 Cadet bullet; with the external lube grove you can't just put a handful in your pocket. Made this hand lubricator and die to lube as I shoot.

My heeled bullets just get tumbled in liquid alox. I find that with these short cases---I use 38 S&W long for .360 no 5---the low pressure can result in significant blow back, blackening the case and affecting the velocity. I don't re-size, just re-prime, add powder and pop the bullet in. The liquid alox is sufficient to hold the bullet in place.
