black powder cartridge scraper
Feb 6th, 2017 at 4:18pm
Print Post
I read that the old timers shooting blackpowder and using the same case would
use a scraper between shots to clean the inside of the case.  I have not been
able to find a picture of such a tool.  If anybody has one in their collection or
made one to use could you please post a picture or a link to one?

Thanks Charlie

Don't have a picture, but do recall seeing one. Pretty simple really.
The metal part of the scraper was made of flat sheet brass, about butter knife thickness, and continuing with a tang that had wood slabs pinned to it to form a palm size handle.
The portion that did the scraping was shaped to fit the inside walls of the case, kinda D-bit shaped.

The best picture is in Randy Wright's book on schuetzen rifles Smiley.

I copied his idea and used a jig saw blade with the teeth ground off.   I sectioned a .32-40 case with a Dremel tool so that I could match the curvature of the bottom of the case.   Without doing that step it leaves a little bit of powder fouling in the bottom of the case which can make case capacity change from shot to shot.

Thank you, I appreciate the plug for my Schuetzen book.

I'll save you the cost of my book. Here is an illustration of how to make a cartridge scraper.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

You are welcome RSW Smiley. It's a good book.  I don't think there is anything comparable when it comes to getting into this type of shooting.
