thanks for everyone's comments. We now know:
BORE: 0.452
LANDS: 0.458
found my Star sizer, it has 0.452.
do not have 0.458, but 0.459 which when PP, should be right.
loading 10 rds today. As you can see the leade is only 0.055.

THE LAST IN MY SEARCH:
First my grand dad started all this leaving me a Stevens. The case still had blood from one of his hunts.

Then after many suggestions 1) cast my own 350 gn lead got out all my casting tools and 2) learned how to PP. Loaded 15 rounds and made my own front mount absolutely level with rear, bore sighted. got this at 100.

5 did not fire, which is likely the trigger spring a smith installed. One fired but the primer did not ignite the 35 gn 3031. So I got a slug shown here. Those that did looked like confetti. thanks for your advise. I am done. Patch went smoothly down bore.

It is hard to tell with my old eyes looking at your chamber cast, but it looks a little to me like there is no bevel on the rear ends of the lands. It looks like the rear end of the land is square, and would plow a land impression on the bullet rather than swage it with a beveled end (leade).  However, your picture of the PP bullet doesn't show damage to the patch that I'd expect with square-ended lands. If you still have that cast, take a look at the rear ends of the lands in the cast - square ends would go a long way to explaining the problem with the jacketed bullet.

Here's a pic of a cast of my 40-72's chamber, hopefully you can see the leade (slight bevel or ramp in the land impression) forward of the transition from case diameter to bore.

Here's a closeup clearly showing the bevel on the impression of the rear end of the land.

are you using Cerro-safe?   I have found that I get better casts by using a heat gun to warm the chamber and throat portion of the barrel and adjacent action to a temp where it is about as hot as I can stand to touch it barehanded.  I guess it like heating up a mold to avoid wrinkly bullets.

Jy3855, what are you using for lube in the barrel before you cast? I always thought that the "wrinkles" were caused by oil- like the suggestion comparing them to a cold mold, or oils will do to a bullet. Your cast is about as slick as I've ever seen.

I don't lube the chamber/bore before casting. Like QM, I also heat the chamber/throat area with a heat gun before casting, getting it too hot to comfortably hold. Once I pour the cast, I allow 15 minutes for shrinkage and push it out. I think that the hotter you get the chamber, the smoother the cast will be.

For this cast, it was easy, as the barrel was unscrewed from the action and I removed the forearm, so it was easy to heat the barrel and I didn't have the action as a heat-sink drawing heat from the barrel. Because it was so easy to heat the barrel and it stayed hot, this one is better than my usual casts.

Here's a pic more typical of my casts:

Well, there ya go, then. That's good to know- I'd used a thin coat of high-heat silicone grease on the couple I poured and thought the wrinkles were caused by that. Maybe the grease did contribute, but more likely the "mold" (barrel) wasn't hot enough. Thanks for taking the time to explain, it'll help if I do it again someday.
