C. Sharps?
Jan 21st, 2017 at 11:21am
Print Post
Hello Folks,
I hope all of you are well. So along with shooting Rimfire Shuetzen I'm becoming interested in 22 BPCR. The event looks like fun and heck it's a good excuse to purchase another single shot rifle Smiley
I was thinking of having C. Sharps build me a Low Wall in 22LR.
What have been your experiences with C. Sharps?
Thank You,
Scott

Scott if it were me I would probably lean towards a CPA. Reason being you are only a barrel and a breech block away from having another rifle to shoot in yet another competitive disipline. If you are leaning towards the C Sharps my only concern would be who's barrel would be put on the rifle it being the more important as well as the triggers.

Thanks John,
I hope you are well Smiley I'm leaning toward the C. Sharps rifle after my experiences with CPA. I see that C. Sharps offers a single set trigger and have read that they use Badger barrels. I'll confirm the barrel manufacturer before I would order.
Take Care,
Scott

Scott, I have a C Sharps model 75 with the single set trigger.  Fine rifle.  I got mine 5 or so years go and was told it had a Badger barrel.  My rifle has a 30" octagon barrel in a "regular" barrel weight, not a heavy barrel.  Weighs about 9 1/2 pounds.

I believe that Badger has not made BPCR barrels for a few years, I don't know if they are even still in business. Unless someone has some old ones kicking around.

The C-Sharps rifles I've seen have been Well fit and finished!
My wife has a '75 she shoots in BPCR Silhouette.
I had a Very Nice one in Win. 1885 but traded it for an original Stevens 44.5.

as far as I know Badger was sold  few years back and is pretty much making barrels for military contract now.   I'm not sure they are making anything else for general consumption.

if there is more current info I'd welcome correction.

To my current knowledge they are now only using Green Moutain barrels. I having had a bad experiance with the only blank I have bought and used from them not being what I personaly exspected to receive in regards to extreme accurracy was hopefully just only a fluke. There are quite a few here who speak highly of them for Silly Wet shooting and not knowing if their expectaions are as high as mine for benchrest competiton hopefully mine just some how snuck past quality control. I would do all the research as is possible as for one to spend around $2000.00 for a rifle and not get what was expected in regards to the best in accuracy should not be taken lightly.

I believe that C. Sharps uses Green Mountain and now McGowan barrels.  I don't have a lot of experience with Green Mountain barrels, but I have one on a C. Sharps 1885 used for long range shooting.  It's as good as any of my Badger barrels.

With respect to .22LR accuracy, my CPA in .22LR is really accurate.

Both C. Sharps & Green Mountain offer terrific products. Have had several rifles from CSA and barrels from GrnMtn. My 40-65 Hepburn has a GrnMtn barrel and never a complaint. Great products & great service. Can't go wrong with either.

Glenn - 2x CPA 44 1/2 w/22LR (Shilen ratchet-rifled & Bartlein 5R rifled), 38-40RH & 38-55WCF (Bartlein 5R rifled) & 40-65WCF (GrnMtn 'X') barrels

I think I'm going to go the route of a Winder Musket action and adding a Douglas Barrel Smiley Get the trigger tuned and add a speedlock.

Since the thoughts have been finalized, can you mention what went wrong with CPA?

I had a CPA that needed to be returned 3 times for rupturing cases. They refunded me my money and I sought other options.
I went with a Cody Ballard #6 for offhand shooting and a BSA Martini MKII for benchrest shooting.
This time around I'm thinking building a rifle is the way to go.

Scott I would not rule out a Shilen barrel or others for that matter. I would also take a real close at Lilja's barrels and their Olympic success's. I think your route of building the rifle around the barrel and chamber of your choice to be an extremely excellent one and the proper approach to get what you are looking for as being the end result.

Yours Sincerely
John Louis
