Tapered bullet / fixed round ?

Because of my eye problems, I am selling some of my rifles, but not all. I have a 32-40 High Wall that I'm keeping just for plinking at 100 yards or less. That's about the upper limits for my eyes. I have a bunch of 200 gr. Saeco bullets made up and they're tapered. My question is , is it alright to load these to make a fixed round ? I will not be crimping. As I said, only for plinking and having some fun. Also, what type of accuracy should I expect with these bullets in a fixed load? Someone else will be sighting it in for me. Thanks, Dale.

In my 1885 I've shot the 200gr Saeco tapered bullet with black powder, both in the case, and breech seated.   The fixed ammunition wasn't as good as breech seated, but it was still reasonably accurate.  I had only the base band in the case.  My rifle has a 0.050" freebore and 1.5 degrees per side leade.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I have the old Ideal Doc Hudson tapered mold for the .38-55, and have used it to load fixed ammo in several guns. I like it, as the guns I've used it in had larger bores, and the large driving band made a good seal. No issues at all using it, and I even put a slight crimp on the loads I was using in my 1893 Marlin repeater.

Dale, if the tapered bullets are to be shot fixed with smokeless - a light crimp will keep the bullet from sliding back into the case
