D. S. Cole rifle

Hi all,
I am looking for another single shot rifle build and have come across the D. S. Cole patent.
It looks like a nice trim action.
Does anyone have any experience with one of these?
Maybe some pics?
Thanks,
Dave

I have played with one in Ron Peterson's shop in Albuquerque. I think it was in 45-70. Pretty slick. It looks like from the ad in the Journal that there may be no more than 28 of the rifles around.

I read this in the new Journal after my initial post.
I guess my request is going to be a longshot, to say the least.
Thanks,
Dave

For the very little it's worth, I have it in my memory that Dick Binger (Stott's Creek Armory) at one time either restored or reproduced a Cole.

I've exchanged messages with GT here, and hopefully he'll notice your post. He's built two from Storie castings and seems satisfied with the design.

I think at one time Rodney Storie cast some of these. He did several different ones. Could be wrong though.......

There is a chapter in "A Potpourri of Single Shot Rifle Actions" by DeHaas.  Covers the prototype Cole action that Rodney Storie put together.

I have that book somewhere.
I'll have to go dig it out.
Thanks.

If this works, here is a pic of a Storie action.

Pic of the top of action, I don't have a clue who did the machining.
I bought it at the Q about twenty years ago.
If more pics will help you let me know.

LD1,
Those pics are great.
I can use all the pics you want to post.
And maybe some measurements to go with them?
You wouldn't want to sell this, would you?!?
Thanks,
Dave

At one time I think John King did some work on Storie actions. I know he did some 1877 Sharps. Could have done others.

i used to own 2 of the originals, one was near mint and the other had been in a fire.didn't do much to it but burn the stock.they are very simple actions and strong.only about 6 or 7 parts.both had 34" remington barrels and long range sights.which was what d.s.cole used.dick binger wanted to do a history on them at one time.i used to know a man who had a lot of the history on him but could not find him.

Here is a pic of my action taken apart. It's very simple, few parts also a Neider style firing pin and a transfer bar between the hammer and the fireingpin. There are only three pin screws 1 for the trigger, 1 for the hammer, and 1 for the breechblock to lever no link, lever slides back and forth on a pin through the front of the action and the fork on the front of the lever. Plus there is a detent plunger and spring & setscrew to hold lever in battery not in pic. Plus a screw to hold both hammer & trigger springs.
The extractor hinges on a half round lug cast into the action and the half round notch on the lower front of the extractor (not the best idea that I've seen)
Hope this helps.
