Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

You made it into a very nice gun! I have a Baldwin front globe on one of my Ballards, which looks similar to the Shaver you have. You'll like the narrow post for most shooting, especially as the distance of the target gets farther away! The narrow post makes centering on the target a lot easier.

CDNN has one for $800, but by the time I bring it into CA I'd have to add $100, not counting shipping.

CDNN has the trapper models on sale for $799.99 in 45-70, 30-40
Krag, and 38-55 Win. This is where I got mine. I believe the MSRP is around $1400 making this a great deal. However I don't think the Hiwalls are selling too well since for $800.00 you can buy a new Rem. 700 or Win. M70 for that price!

If I could find a Trapper for $800, I'd snap it up and rebarrel it too.  Might even choose the 30-40 Krag as I recently bought 150 cases "just in case I need them later", and I already have dies.

cdnn has them for $799.99. 30-40,38-55, 45-70. shipping on any long gun is under  15$

My gunsmith put the crosshair insert in the Shaver front site which is hard to see. I'm going to try the post insert. It's pretty skinny as well and if I don't like it I'll get my machine shop to cut a new insert with a thicker post on their wire EDM machine!

Also have the large Shaver P-H front globe and think it is a good piece. You should have received 10 or 12 inserts with the sight. One thing I like about it is the ability to 'stack' as many inserts as you may want in the sight. You can use the heavier cross-hair insert and a post and whatever insert you may wish to custom build the look you wish. Also, Distant Thunder offers insets for same. I have a set of heavy lollipop inserts from them that work well with the cross-hair for me.

How about a bit over $800....Lots of them around as they were terrible sellers. I've seen a few at $850-$895 in my travels...

Indeed! Those Cowboy calibers aren't much in demand any more except for your Cowboy Action Crew. The Miroku Hiwalls were made in .30-06 and .270 Win. both popular hunting calibers but I haven't seen those on sale. My gunsmith also told me that some folks were having extraction problems with the rimless calibers. Hopefully I'll get out to the range this afternoon and testfire my Hiwall!

Got 'er done! I went down to my minifarm in Boston KY and test fired the Hiwall. I only did 9 rounds I think. Then I fired 5 rounds in my Mauser MKX which is also done in .308 Win. I had my gunsmith rebarrel it with a .308 Remington Sendero barrel. It was being testfired as well.
The recoil on my Hiwall was very mild as I expected it to be due to the varmint style barrel contour. I figured I may have a new walnut stock with a high comb for telescope shooting and a rubber buttpad installed eventually.
The trigger will need to be lightened. I didn't think it was excessive for a commercial Winchester. Miroku [or maybe Winchester?] completely over engineered the new trigger group. I will have to take it back to my gunsmith after the break in and have him do a trigger job on it.

Re: Winchester 1885 Hiwall Scope Mount

I'm going to need a scope mount for this eventually. For this effort the 8.000" of the barrel has a 1.200" OD. There are drilled 6-48 screw holes in the receiver. I can use this for the rear scope mount. The front one will have to be a one off. I believe that only the Leupold style bases are available for Win. 1885. I almost always used the Weaver style [M1913] bases. I can machine a 6.000" flat ahead of the receiver on the barrel and mount a Marlin 336 base on it. But I think I'll have my local machine shop cut me a one off piece of aluminum with a .600" radius on the base and Picatinny rail on the top with their wire EDM machine. I'm fairly certain I can get the new mount low enough so I can still use the iron sites without removing the scope bases. If any of you readers have any insight about this scope base clearance matter please send me a PM.

This is the latest. My gunsmith installed a Weaver Base and did a trigger job. I thought he was going to mill a flat on top of the barrel and install a Marlin 336 base which is flat on the bottom. The one piece base is a Weaver with a 638 stamped on it. I went to the Weaver website and couldn't find it listed. Looks like base has an .600" radius on the base. I had the barrel machined straight 1.200" OD for the first 8.000" just in case a flat needed to be milled on the barrel. The scope base is low enough that I can use the iron sites and the base isn't obscuring anything.

Here's the pic with the scope base and Kelley Soule Site. Apparently I can only post one pic per post.
I've yet to buy my scope. I'm leaning towards a Leupold VX-2 3X-9X x 40.

Keep an eye on eBay for the stock. The pistol-grip stock with shotgun buttplate shows up from time-to-time. When I changed out mine the one I got (thank you, ChrisC) bolted on with zero fitting. It had been broken at the wrist, but the repair was next to invisible and still good to this day. Makes it a much nicer rifle to shoot.

I picked up a new trapper model for $625 on guns international several months ago. a cabelas store in the Midwest had it listed the cost was an additional 25 bucks for shipping and then tax. it is in 38-55 I bought it with the intention of putting a new barrel on it. I could be wrong but I don't think an action of this quality can be bought for what they are asking. I have looked many times and have never seen one for that price. I do have a hunch that sooner or later some of the dealers will dump them. from what I see they are not a hot item. if I buy the barrel does anyone have any idea who could thread and chamber it.? my lathe isn't big enough for the job. I do want to stay with the 38-55 caliber. actually the trapper shoots pretty good but that short barrel is flat ugly. joe

Any competent gunsmith could do the work. I've recently gotten excellent work from Steve Rhoades. His website is Arizona Sharpshooters and lists his contact info.
