Winchester 1885 Hiwall

Here's a pic of my Hiwall which I recently got back from my gunsmith. Originally it was a 30-40 Krag Trapper carbine. I had my gunsmith install a 26" Douglas XX stainless barrel in .308 Win. 1-10 twist.

I hope so! I've not got to take it out to the range yet for a testfire. It's been too cold!

Konan,
Did you try shooting the rifle in the original 30-40 configuration?  Around 10 years ago, I had Shiloh build a 1874 military carbine (when they built such a thing) in 30-40 and it shot very well.  A handy hunting rifle and I'm sorry I sold it to a man in Alaska.  With such a strong action as the high wall or Sharps, you could use hot loads without a problem and almost match the 308 cartridge but with an original, antique cartridge.

Any way ya slice it, those are really different sights than most .308s ever see. You must have good eyes, huh? Let us hear how it goes when ya get 'er out.

I didn't shoot it in 30-40. I didn't have any ammo for it and I had no intention of buying brass or reloading dies in 30-40 since I've got more .308 Win. or 7.62 NATO brass and ammo then any other caliper except .223 Rem.
I ordered the 1-10 twist barrel so I can shoot the 220 gr. Sierra MK's if I want. The 30-40 original loadout was a 220 gr RN bullet.
My long range vision [with glasses] is still pretty good. I'm 68. My gunsmith put the crosshair insert in the Shaver front site which is hard to see. I'm going to try the post insert. It's pretty skinny as well and if I don't like it I'll get my machine shop to cut a new insert with a thicker post on their wire EDM machine!

Very nice rifle, but wondering - which is less expensive, a new barrel or brass and reloading dies?

Graf and Son has 30-40 brass available if any readers of this post need some.

Well, considering the Trapper version of the new Winchester 1885s have a 16 1/2" barrel, when I've considered picking one up, it was with the intention of immediately rebarreling to a more useful (to me) barrel length. I have no use for a 16 1/2" barreled 1885.

I think that if you bought the rifle at a very reduced price, considering the price of a barrel and gunsmith fees, you still made a good choice.  I agree that a 16 1/2" barrel is silly but I guess if you want a short carbine for woods hunting or a carry rifle for the trunk of your car, it fills a bill.

When you get right down to it, $800 for a new 1885 action with wood and a barrel hanging on it is a pretty good deal (note, it has a long top tang).

It was a good deal, and in that barrel length a smart move. Me, I love the Krag cartridge, but not in the version that was when he bought it. It needed a new tube one way or another.

If I could find a Trapper for $800, I'd snap it up and rebarrel it too.  Might even choose the 30-40 Krag as I recently bought 150 cases "just in case I need them later", and I already have dies.
