Have any of you done any work building a centerfire version of the .25 Stevens rimfire based on a .22 hornet case the same length as the rimfire case, for .257 bullets. If so has anybody had reamers made?

I think so.  It is called a . 25 Hornet = Stevens .25 Long +/- a few thou.

June 2010 SSE has an article about how to make Stevens 25 RF equivalent cases if you want to keep the original chambering and breech blocks. Pretty easy and works fine.

I have a .25 hornet. That uses a full length hornet case expanded which is quite a bit longer than the .25 Stevens case. I want to use a case the same length.

Easy enough to shorten a Hornet case.  Also not too awful hard to form a straight wall case just like the Stevens RF out of Hornet brass.  Mighty helpful to have a lathe, though.

Mr. Singleshot's Cartridge Handbook (F. De Haas) describes a short 25 hornet used for this purpose.

Your post is unclear to me. Is your intention an equivalent cartridge or a cartridge for conversion of .25 RF rifles? The .257 size is throwing me off, as originals are .251(ish).

You might check out the Castboolits site.  There's a guy with the handle of Chev William who has done extensive work swaging and trimming .22 Hornet and 5.7 x 28 cases to form centerfire versions of the .25 Stevens rimfire.

My intent is a cartridge that is equivalent in length to the .25 Stevens. The base diameter would be slightly larger of the hornet size and a straight taper to a .257 bullet dia. Ballistics would be the same as the .25 Stevens only with a 75gr. ? 257 dia. Bullet. I have done quite a few .25 Stevens conversations by shortening, thinning the rim, turning the base, and exanding to .251. I just wondered if anyone had already done anything with just a shortened hornet case expanded to .257? As in made reamers, dies, come up with loads?

By the way USCRA I am not short of equipment, six lathes, 3 mills, 2 shapers, a surface grinder, die filer, and 2 universal tool grinders, and about 200 hand mills (files).

C&H 4D actually lists a .25 Stevens die set, which would likely be used in a CF chambering.

Lee,
FWIW....Here are some thoughts that I jotted down in the middle of the night last summer. A .25cal necker or neck & throater might give you some options. When I get my lathe moved and permanently set up, I am going to make a turned cartridge with 100% load density for a certain bullet.

What about the bore diameter of .251" for .25RF Stevens chambered guns? Seems you would need to make your .25-21 cartridges to use the .251" bullet, or end up with a lot of leading or pressure issues.

Well, wouldn't I have been in for a suprise when I slugged the bore to make a reamer pilot. My red face feels what Ira Redkey's neck must have felt like.  Embarrassed. Obviously, some more think-time is in order.

It is.  Not many moulds for that size.
