Good Loads for a 25 WCF (25-20)

I am looking at purchasing a Low Wall in 25-20. (1893 Manufacture, 28" barrel) I have had one before (Win 92) but didn't keep it long enough to start reloading.  I plan to crank around with this rifle and want some good load data for it.  Anyone have some loads they are willing to share?

Thanks for your reply.  I would probably start out with fixed, but would be interested in trying some breech seated loads too.  I have used breech seated loads in a 38-55 (High Wall) before.

Check out 35Remington's replies under "25-20 Reloading" on the Marlinowners site.  For fixed ammo, at least, it is the absolute last word on the subject.

I like the underlying philosophy, too:  "Everybody needs a .25-20; some just haven't realized it yet!"

I have an original 25-20 SS and have been using 6.9g of 4227 and a 72 grain bullet cast from an onl Ideal mouls.  Been fiddling with it off and on for a couple of years.  Some days it (me?) shoots real well, others not so well.  Fun little cartridge and with the plain base bullet it is cheaper to shoot than the 22 long rifle.

Thanks for the information.  Yea I agree with your philosophy.  The potential is there for a real nice varmint and target round.  Some pretty impressive velocities with the 75 grain jacketed bullet.  A small amount of lead needed to cast bullets, and the recoil is almost non existent.  I live on 5 acres of partially wooded land, and I want a SS that I can reload and shoot in the back yard, shoot some small game, and possibly a coyote or two!

Ballards may be weaker,

Just note here, since I'm a Marlin fan. Smiley  There is no such caliber as a .25-20WCF! Marlin introduced the .25-20 round in their Model 1889, and later 1894 Marlins. Winchester later added it to their lineup. But it is a Marlin cartridge, not a Winchester as many think.

Just fun facts Frank! Did you know that Winchester copied Marlin when they came out with their .25-35 too? Marlin offered the .25-36 Marlin in their 1893 Model. Winchester changed the shoulder slightly, and called theirs the .25-35 Win. Their cartridge would fit in Marlins, but Marlin's cartridge wouldn't fit into the .25-35. So the .25-36 Marlin became extinct pretty quickly.

Be sure and check the chamber configuration on that 1893 mfg
low wall.
My Low Wall, also 1893 mfg is marked "25 W.C.F." BUT, this Original chamber is actually the  25-20 Single Shot Stevens. In an earlier thread a while back, one or more others chimed in that they, too had a 25 WCF, that was actually the 25-20 SS chambering..
Seems like Win did like to "assume" others designs as their own "WCF" s  , as mentioned already by others:
32-40 Ballard/Marlin, 38-55 Ballard/Marlin, 25-20 SS Stevens, 25-20 Marlin, 25-36Marlin.
etc

Thanks for the info.  Because my research states that the 25-20 WCF was not introduced in chamberings until 1895.

beltfed,
does the 25-2o SS take a .257 bullet also, or is it a different diameter?

Winchester called the .25-20ss by the moniker of .25-20 wrf to not mention that it was a Stevens invention. Then, when they got around to the .25-20 repeater, no matter from where, they again used the WRF suffix. Winchester never went in for using the name of a competitor on their products. Other makers were about as bad, just not as many of their products are seen. How about all the pistol makers that "stole" the .44WCF, and started calling it things like .44-40 and whatever else. Just oldtime business ethics.

The 1905 J Stevens Arms and Tool Co. Catalogue boasted accuracy of  cloverleaf groups at 200 yards with 20 grains of black powder and a breech seated 86 grain lead bullet.  Customer testimonies with pictures of 200 yd groups supported the claims.  These were Stevens rifles with Pope barrels.  It was pretty much the premier cartridge of that time.

There are some who think it remains a premier choice.
