25-20SS fixed loads?
Jan 3rd, 2017 at 8:10am
Print Post
Good morning all,
I would like to start shooting one of my Stevens Tip Ups in 25-20SS today. Though I intend to later BS, I am looking for some loading data for 105gr fixed right now. I have searched every reference that I own and am still coming up blank for anything over 86gr. Certainly, one of you shoots 100's or heavier? Thank you.

The problem with what you want to do, is that your twist rate is 1 in 13 and a 100+ gr bullets won't stabilize.

I recently measured the capacity of Reminton 25/20 WCF (Marlin) and Jamison 25/20 ss and found no real difference so, what I would suggest is that you look for BS data and reduce it by 1 full grain or more and try that.

Results with fixed were so-so with Ideal 257283. Case neck tension was all over the place. Groups averaged about 2 1/2". I thought that I may as well dive into BS'ing, so dug out some Hoch 105's and pan lubed with a mix I appropriately called "MuttLube". I sure was excited to see this group start shaping up. I forgot to rester the scope on the far right shot. What a hoot! I will play some more tomorrow with some Pope lube and a few different loads at 100 yards instead of 75. We are supposed to have below zero nights for at least a week starting tonite.
