Winchester high wall limited edition 38-55

Hello.  Happy New Year

This is a new round for me,  not alot of jacketed bullets available
( Hornaday , Barnes). Midway has some nice lead lube bullets but not sure a need 500 .....but there are others in there .  I have starline brass coming in the mail.  The rifle appears to have a .377 bore from some reports .. The Hornaday bullet is .375..
Just wondered if anyone has experience with this rifle or round loading in "modern firearms". For lack of a better term ,,also dies there seems to be an issue with some dies and lead vs jacketed bullets .?
Smiley Smiley
Thanks for your help

Welcome to the ASSRA. Tell us some details. Is this a 'modern' Winchester? Barrel length & twist (profile is also of interest, though not critical for load info) are useful.

What do you want to do with the rifle? Hunt, target shoot, whatever. Not much in the way of competitions for jacketed bullets. Most require lead.

Good group of folks shoot BPCR (both BP & .22LR) at the OKC Gun Club in Arcadia, 20mi, or so, north of you. Good contact is Dan Zimmerman, who owns DZ Arms on the SW side of OKC. Another good local contact would be Steve Baldwin of Baldwin Sights (google Dan or Steve via their business for contact info). Another place to shoot is the Stillwater Gun Club. John Gage in Stillwater is a good contact for same.

You might try these. For less than the cost of 2 boxes of jacketed you could have that 500 (a lot cheaper than Midway.) (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
You could have plenty to work up a good lot and blast away for a long time.

I'd be surprised if that bullet does not lead your barrel. I have better luck with a beeswax/crisco mixture, the blue lube is too hard for the speeds that bullet will take. If the bullet leads the barrel freeze a dozen or so bullets, chip the lube off and relube with the soft grease to see if the leading goes away. Be sure to try the new lube on a clean barrel that has been patched with grease, nothing leads quicker than a dry bore. The bullet diameter is also marginal, .378 or larger works better.

You might find something here. They do use the blue lube on some products.

If you don't like the blue lube you could get polymer coated bullets from either supplier.

Hi Dan,
I may have the same rifle. It's a High Wall Traditional Hunter. .38-55, 28" barrel. I slugged mine and it is 0.377.  It has a 1-15 twist. I believe mine was made around 2006; I bought it as NOS.
If you are going to cast your own, I found the RCBS 82090 (.378-312) to be a very accurate choice. If you just want to purchase slugs, Big Sky Cast Bullets had a couple good selections; one was a 300 gr Hickey (0.380 dia).  Both of these projectiles gave me excellent results out to 300 yds (haven't tried it at longer ranges yet).
You didn't mention if you were using BP or smokeless; I use smokeless (BH209) and the lubes don't seem to be an issue.
My only minor complaint about the rifle is the trigger will only adjust so much and it's still a bit more pull and creep than I would prefer, but it's not that bad; some day I'll have that remedied.
Enjoy your new purchase!
Mike.

Thanks for the info .... Yes that's  the same rifle, if I can figure out the rear vernier sight ,I'm going to try and take an antelope in Wym. In Oct ,  is that the sight you use or have you upgraded that on your rifle ?   I was going to try the lighter bullets thinking of getting higher velocities , and yes I'm using smokeless powder ..don't have any loads yet for these bullets , any recipes you have would be great ...thanks again !

Hi Dan,
My rifle had open sights on it and I can't see through them any longer so I put a Lee Shaver Economy Soule rear sight and one of his globe sights on the front.  I use it strictly for targets and gongs. Lastly, I fitted a DZ Arms 8X scope, hoping my father-in-law might try it; nice scope set-up and it shoots very well.
My BH209 load is usually 24gr ignited with a Fed 215M primer. I put a 0.60 veggie wad under the bullet.  Velocity is around 1250fps.  I have tried 27 gr of IMR 3031 in another 38-55 rifle I have with good results using a 330gr bullet; the primer was a Fed 210M. If you are after more velocity, the IMR 3031 might be the better choice.
Last, I mentioned being less than satisfied with the trigger, so it motivated me to drop it off with a local smith to have it tuned.  I'll be anxious to try it out after I get it back.
Mike.

I used a Vollmer 255 gr8 .376 diameter flat point to kill a deer very dead in Wyoming last fall.  He makes several weight flatpoints in several finished diameters.  They shoot good in my 1894 Winchester and the bullet performed excellent at 90 yards.  Google Vollmer bullets.  Tom

You need to get light fast bullets out of your head for this kind of cartridge.
The best velocities with softer lead bullets (for best accuracy) will be 1100 to about 1300 fps.

The best powders will be extruded (stick) powders like 5744, 4227, 4198 and similar burning rates.
Now you can go to high velocity with jacketed bullets but the velocities will still be low compared to modern rounds and your accuracy will not be as good most of the time.

Your best accuracy will probably be with a softer heavier cast bullet.
You could also try a gas check cast bullet.

You can also make contact with the guys at cast boolits for a lot of input.

Dan,

Well, if you are still considering jacketed bullets for hunting, you might buy a box or two of the Speer 235 grain bullets (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links);

With a single shot rifle, of course you don't need to worry about having a flat nose on the bullet.  Your Browning is a strong action, and you could load this bullet up into the 2,000 fps range with RL7 using 375 Win data.
