Is CPA the only one currently manufacturing these right now?

Jerry Cleave makes a prime-deprime tool very similar to the Jake Simmon's tool. There is also a new tool in work that functionally is the same a the Pope-style tools but uses a single lever. They use standard shell holders such as RCBS. The maker will post on this forum when they are available. He has a batch in work and they should be available in the not too distant future.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Do you know how much Jerry sells his tools for or how to contact him?

C. Sharps Arms is now making a nice looking Pope style de-re capper.  I haven't seen it in person but there is a review of it on the Historic Shooting web forum.

Jerry Cleave can be reached at 559-338-2357. If his prices haven't changed the tool he makes is $150.00, including one shell holder. Extra shell holders are $25.00 each.

It definitely will be money well spent. This is a picture of mine.

Twenty five plus years ago I bought my first "re- and de-" directly from Jake Simmons. The one Jerry Cleave makes seems to be a very close copy (right down to the primer pocket scrapers in the handle tips.  I now have a couple of examples made by Jake as well as several other types and still prefer his to about anything else I can find... so Jerry's should do very well.

BTW, a couple of friends I have talked to found those primer pocket scrapers to get in the way so they replaced them with some little acorn-shaped end caps or covered the whole handle(s) with wood or rubber tubing.  I haven't found this necessary myself, but some folks do.

I sent Jerry an email a week ago and haven't heard back. I might just get one from CPA. The C sharps looks decent quality and is a quite a bit cheaper though. I was hoping someone made one that was color case hardened like the ones Meacham use to make. Those ones look real nice.

Jerry Cleave has no internet service where he lives. He only gets to a computer every week or two. A phone call will get an answer from him.

Jerry Simmons tools are a copy of the ones made by Charles S. Pool (Jerry Cleave's uncle). The tools Jerry Cleave makes are true copies of the tools made by his Uncle Charles S. Pool, using his uncle's lathe and mill. Jerry also has all of his uncle's records and can tell you who any of his Pool Tools were sent to and any repairs or additions that were done through the years.

The Story of the Pool Tool is in the March 1998 Precision Shooting magazine, written by Gerald A. Cleave. It's a very interesting article with plenty of history. It's well worth finding a copy.

I'm fortunate to count Jerry Cleave as one of my close friends and shoot with him once a month. I just wanted to keep history straight Froggie, I wasn't trying to pick on you.

Does anyone know if the Cleave shell holders will fit the Simmons tool?

That is not actually a primer pocket scraper.  It a screwdriver blade.   Wink
I told Jerry Simmons that he should put a phillips head on the other handle.
He did not take too kindly to the suggestion.

The tool made by Jerry Simmons is slightly smaller than the one made by C. Pool or his nephew Jerry Cleave so the parts will not interchange. I have two made by Pool and when I asked J. Cleave to make me some shell holders and expanders he did and the work was just as good as those made by his uncle. I also have one made by Jerry Simmons. I will attach the pictures of the tools. The one on the left was made by Simmons.

Jerry H,

I bow to your superior knowledge of the Cleave/Simmons tool relationships.  Of course there is at least some indication that a California guy named Chicks somebody or other made one in the late 19th Century that was copied or adapted by Harry Pope and got this whole thing started.  IIRC, I got that reference from the schuetzen section of John Dutcher's book of the Ballards.

mes,

It's neither a primer scraper nor a screwdriver blade, it's a palm gouger!  I've got the scars to prove it!
