Jerry Cleave said his uncle always referred to his Pool Tools as being a copy of Pope's tools. He never tried to take credit for the design but gave it to Pope instead.

Froggie, I agree with your assessment as the pocket scrapers/screw drivers are actually palm gougers.  I too, carry some scars.
Not to disagree, nit pick, nor start an argument, but when I ordered my de/recapper from Jerry Simmons back in the late '70s (by phone), Jerry told me the extensions on the end of the handles were pocket scrapers--one for large primer pockets and the other for small primer pockets. I also had one of Jerry's push type bullet seaters for my Ballard.  Seems that they would work for a CPA Stevens. Just passing on information.

Jake Simmons told me once that his research on this tool was that Pope nor Stevens had anything to do with the design.  Ledball

Just for comparison, here is a photo of an original Pope tool. Someone more knowledgeable than I, please correct me if I'm wrong but it's my understanding that those priming tools were only available while Pope was associated with the Stevens Company.

Randy, I can't answer your question, but wouldn't that mean that Stevens probably had a patent on the tool?

I have seven or eight re/de cappers in various calibers all purchased, ordered and received, directly from Jake Simmons when camping near him at Friendship matches. I’ve mentioned this here before but the dance that went on with each order and every delivery was memorable, always the same, and bears retelling. When approached for a new caliber he would first remember or ask what you already had and if what was desired could be achieved by replacing just the shell holder and/or the decapping arm he would argue that that was all you really needed, and that his tool was easily changed and a whole new tool would be expensive too. You had to argue several times that you definitely wanted a whole complete new tool, which he would seemingly reluctantly finally agree to do. Upon delivery at the next shoot you would yet again receive the stern lecture that the primer pocket scrapers were not ever, ever to be used as screwdrivers, an instruction which in his disapproving view I was scolded too many fools failed to heed.  —  Bob

I have not examined very many of those tools but don't remember seeing one marked with patent dates or patent pending. The number of those tools I have examined however, is too small to be of any real significance. To further reveal the depth of my ignorance, I do not know who should be credited with the tool's design. I would be great if some expert would jump in here to enlighten us.

Part of the hidden history of firearms & such, Randy.  My statement about a patent was just conjecture on my part. Maybe there never was a patent, but highly doubtful.
Maybe one of patent experts can shine some light on the subject. I've never had any luck googling patents, drawings, etc.

Thank you for dropping that bit of history into this conversation. I doubt any of us will stop referring to it as a Pope tool, it's still good to know who actually patented the thing.
As it was invented by a guy named Chick, if one of those happened to get magnetized, would that make it a Chick magnet?  Wink

I persoanaly have found the Schoyen to be a superior design compared to the Pope style and I would highly recommend it.
