I'd  like your advice for loading .45 Colt in my Uberti 1885 Winchester Single Shot Schuetzen style rifle. Black powder type i.e.: F, FF, FFF? In particular what type of bullet would you recommend for accuracy out to 100 yards?

FFF

soft lube for BP

stay away from bullet alloys that brag about being hard

start with the traditional 250-255 bullets for the caliber, but try others, especially heavier

I think the best bullet to start with is the 454190. Short range the 454424.

You can also size the 456191 (290 gr) and use it. I use it in my S&W. 625.

If it was me, I would duplex the BP with 3 gr Unique, to make sue I could shoot at least 10 shots in a row w/o cleaning.

Carl - these cast bullets are from the Lyman 454190 mold because I believe you don't cast your own ...
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
Order some of each diameter 452 & 454 to determine what your bore likes.
They will be smokeless powder lubed - so boil them in water to remove the lube and then re-lube with a bp lube such as SPG ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

The bullets will be a Bhn 15 comparable to old wheel weight alloy and not a 1:20 alloy.  Don't worry that the hardness will lead the bore - I shoot BP reloads with Lyman #2 that is a cousin to 15.4 Bhn

Reloads: LP Primer - 30 up to 35gr of FFg powder - NO WAD - bullet and crimp hard to minimize blowback

Carl,

I have a 1885 low wall in 45 colt.  I have not tried BP.   However, I have several very successful loads.

Unique:  200 gr Plain Base bullet 7.5 - 8.0 gr loads all touch at 50 yards

300-MP:  280 gr GC bullet 20-21 gr 1,500 - 1,570 fps very strong and accurate

H-4198:  410 gr paper patch bullet - work in progress.

With a single shot, you are not restricted with Overall Cartridge Lenght for feeding like a lever action.  You can duplicte Trapdoor 45-70 loads in the 45 Colt in a single shot!

Speed is not always best for accuracy.  Some of my most accurate loads start out subsonic or up to 1,300 fps.

See the attached link for some load data.

It seems ill-advised to try for .45-70 ballistics in that cartridge, and in that gun. My own sensibilities say that even your loads with the 300mp are pretty stout. Please ease up, for yer own well being. Why did you choose 4198 as a powder?

We do need to be careful about high pressure loads when talking LW. If you have a Browning (jap) 1885 LW, you can use any published load but, if your talking original Winchester, you need to stay close to the BP pressures and the Uberti is a copy of the original Winchester.

The Browning is made strong enough to chamber in 243 Win but not the original Winchester type.
