Shotshell primer history

Could someone lay out the history of the shotshell primer for me? I know a bunch about cartridge development, but I realize I have no idea how we wound up changing out a larger piece of shotshells than we do on metallic cartridges. I'd be much obliged if someone could fill me in or point me in the right direction to find out more for myself.

The battery cup shotgun primer seems to be a direct descendant of the old BOXER primer used in the Snider and Martini-Henry cartridges.  Look at "The Boxer Cartridge in the British Service" by B.A. Temple.
